Team rebranding apparently possible, even rename

Recommended Posts

I would be very surprised if new ownership didn't want to change the brand. That doesn't mean they change the name or the colors.  But there are a ton of design elements that will be tweaked.  There may be some new slogans introduced.  There will be marketing campaigns to call attention to these and generate excitement/buzz for the new ownership.

The name and colors work.  Keep Pounding works.  Those aren't going anywhere, but there will decidedly be changes made in an effort to make things seem new and different.

They would have to get approval from the league among other things and I can't remember when a team has ever been renamed unless it was part of a move. The Panthers have established a strong brand so a rename would be pretty silly. I'm guessing the rebrand discussion is more about marketing materials, wordmarks, uniforms, etc not changing the actual team name or logo.

For people wondering about the source, it's a former player of mine (and later grad assistant) I keep in touch with. He's fairly senior at a marketing firm in the greater Charlotte area that has worked with the Panther organization before. According to him, absolutely everything is on the table. I didn't think to ask who commissioned the effort - I could ask him, but who knows if he can actually tell me that. I assume Navarro, though.

Guessing that a name change is highly unlikely - I mean, why f*ck with a brand that basically works and is established in the market? I would think that the "everything is on the table" approach is sort of a "go wild, show us your vision and your creativity" gambit, but I have no idea how marketing works. I'm just repeating what I'm told.

I love the Panthers colors/uniforms, but I wouldn't mind seeing an alternate. I know everyone loves the idea of black helmets, and they'd look nice, but I'd really like to see white helmets with our black panther logo and blue helmet stripes - same curved shape as current ones. Could outline the panther logo in blue or black. Couple that with white/black top/pants combo, or all white. I think it would look really stylish.

Alright, too much sports fashion. My wife's going to want my opinion on her outfits if she reads this, and I've spent to much time training her to know that I don't care.

    • It will be really interesting to see how both sides handle this. I'm sure the team would love to get him signed to a 4 year deal based on his output so far and some potential factored in, i.e. something like a 4 year $30 million contract.  But I could see his agent telling him the best path is to take the one year offer, put up a big year next year and then really cash in. The team also has to keep in mind T-Mac's 2nd contract, which likely will happen after the 2027 season assuming he keeps improving as expected.  Even if we could get him on a budget 4 year deal for what he could become, the problem then becomes when he wants to re-negotiate in 2 years during the same summer we will extend T-Mac, and you don't want to spend that much on WRs in one offseason, just see the Bengals this last year. Taking everything into consideration, I'm thinking the 1 year deal and then getting him to sign a 4-5 year deal after hopefully say a 800ish yard season next year might be best for our cap situation and separate his and T-Mac's negotiation periods.
    • And yet jax made it no further than we did, and its very possible the Pats don't either. I think it speaks more to the overall down year for the nfl as far as having great/dominant teams, every team this year has fatal flaws that can be exploited
    • Ehhh I agree the nfc is stronger this year but their really werent any truly dominant teams this year everyone is flawed, I think the narrative for the NFL this year will to try ahd force a Josh Allen SB win
