Raise your hand if you hate car shopping.

So yesterday, helped a family member buy a new car yesterday. Having over a decade in the biz and much success with it, I was appalled at how horrible the experience was at every place we visited.

So anyway I am going to be holding a training class for a dealer group next week and wanted some more feedback on what you hate most about the car buying process and any practical suggestions you may have to help make it better.

Any feedback would be much appreciated it.

I enjoyed my last experience.  Took about 20 minutes

This.  I was buying Yukon and I called 3 dealerships and told them to give me their best deals.  I also told them I’m car shopping all over.  The one on independence gave me the best deal.  I got like $8k off invoice price.  My next car will either have to be BMW, Audi or Volvo as I get 12% fleet discount on top of negotiated price.

I had to buy a car when my son was 4.  After about an hour at the dealer waiting for them to bring the car we wanted from another dealership we finally moved into signing the paper work.

The finance guy wanted to sell us all this extra poo and talk down to us about why we needed it - we made it clear at the start to make it quick - no BS and get us signed and out of there.   He did not.

We would have walked out but the car we drove in with had plates off of it already and it probably would have taken longer to get that settled then what we did - which was to call in the manager and berate the finance guy in front of him so things could keep moving.

I don't mind going into the showroom and talking to sales people or the actual buying process.  What I absolutely can't stand is this...within 2 minutes of getting out of my car to walk around and look at vehicles I'm bombarded by a sales guy before I've even had the chance to look at anything. "What kind of vehicle are you looking to but today?" "We have a great deal this week, what can I put you in?" "My name is ______, here's my card, that's a great car isn't it?"

Dude...can I just look without an escort? Can you go away, I just got out of my car? If I'm interested in looking at something I'll come get you.  If I have questions I will ask.  Not really interested in the horsepower of the vehicle...I don't even know what color I want.

I understand they are on commission/draw pay structure and it's very competitive....I used to sell cars at one point in my life.  But damn, let me breathe.

That's why me and my wife will always go at night when the dealership is closed and walk the lot looking at cars.

Oh....and I wish they had the MSRP on the sticker on the window...a lot have gone away from putting the price on the window.

Hendrick has been great to us. Wife got her car from Acura on independence.

I finally got around to getting a new car last month but the one I wanted was at Hendrick in Charleston. I didn't feel like driving 7 hours round trip to sign a bunch of papers. So wife calls them and comes back "it will be here around 10:00 a.m. tomorrow." Sweet, signed all the papers on the dining room table...

    • Like many of the old heads, I’ve been here for a long time.  I got a lot of respect for everyone on this board for your dedication to this team.  We’ve all been through it during the tougher years. At this point in life, I’m not one to judge anyone’s level of dedication, or their reasons why anymore.  Time, and a lot of bad football, will do that.  For me, it’s simple.  We share a common bond.  For that, I love and appreciate all of you crazy SOB’s. For me, last season was at a minimum, entertaining.  BY lead a young team to multiple come from behind 4th qtr wins.  That showed me heart, and that he has the clutch gene.  That’s the wildcard intangible.  For me, that was fun to watch even  if it was mindbogglingly frustrating at times.  Over the past two seasons, we have progressively built a better team around him.  On paper, the defense should be better this season.  That’ll help.  Let’s see what he can do as the other guys continue to develop too.  Besides, his contract is cheap for a few more years, and we just made some smart cap decisions during the draft. Let’s see how it shakes out.

    • I would very much liked to have seen Jake Delhomme's career if Tommy Jone no hurt Jake.  I just know that roster and the leadership were destined to hit paydirt but Jake was never the same after the elbow injury, and unfortunately he was the sole reason they didn't make it back to the big one.  I think that 08 team was the best in the league, and Jake masked his inability well all season til the Arizona game put it all on display.  I'll go back to the season prior even and say the 07 team was primed to be a competitor.  Jake was off to a fantastic start that year (for a Panthers QB).  They may have been a championship caliber club for a few seasons after 08 too.
