A Gettleman legacy

Recommended Posts

never been a Gettleman hater, but I did find this sad surprise.

PFF's Top 25 players under 25 years old for 2018 includes

3 Saints

2 Bucs

1 Falcon

and  0 Panthers.

His strength was supposed to be scouting talent.  Give him credit for KK and Norwell, and getting us out of cap hell, and I'll admit he filled some holes with acceptable or better talent, but division teams were nailing picks all around him.  The 2016 draft was ghastly.  Only 2 players still on the team from a draft just 2 years ago, and the first round pick doesn't even start.

Admitting Getts made a bad pick in 2016 1st round, is admitting Butler is bust. I am not ready to do that quite yet. However, each game that goes by that Butler isn't on the field making an impact, really makes the Hunter Henry miss hurt more.

I think Butler will be solid depth, and Ian Thomas will be that stud we want. However, Gettleman had my backing the entire time he was here, but things like OP really has me wondering how I was so blinded...

Yet we made the playoffs multiple times and went to the Super Bowl... Who cares what the talking heads think, the product on the field speaks for itself.

In this case it isn't a talking heads thing man, this is possibly two entirely wasted drafts.....

Overall, I think it's still to be determined. Early on, he did a great job filling holes with bargain free agents but over time his bargain free agent acquisition became worse and worse and then his last year when he did open the checkbook for some higher priced free agents they turned out to be pretty terrible. A lot of his draft picks are still too young to make a judgement on, but I think it's probably safe to say that he failed to draft any stars (well, CMC could have a chance). My biggest issue with his drafting was that he was too willing to ignore needs to take prospects at positions of strength. If you're doing that you need to be drafting stars. I also didn't like his WR evaluation. He didn't draft WRs. He drafted athletes who fit his idea of what he wanted in a particular WR. KB is the only WR he drafted who played WR exclusively at the college level and even he was considered a WR/TE tweener by many.

If Funchess and CMC turn out to be studs - I will be happy to close this book and never look back.

Saints got all three of theirs in one draft. What an anomaly. Fortunate for them. Terrible for us.

We have seven starters from his five drafts here, and three of those were from the 2015 draft.  Of his 28 picks, 15 are still with the team, a number that includes 7 players taken in 2017 and all five picks from 2015.

and only 3 of those 7 or game day actives last year.

Just because a guy is starting doesn't necessarily mean he's a starting caliber player. Lord knows we all know that based on some of the OTs, DBs, and WRs we've put on the field in recwnt years.

I actually read it as a positive post too, but I think he is knocking Gettleman. Took me a few reads.

That doesn't sound good.

And in that time frame all the other teams in our division have had far higher draft picks on average than we have.

The best talent of the drafts is usually found earlier in the draft rather than later.

I say that completely agreeing that he could have drafted better in his time here. Either way, we aren't in a horrible position with his exit like we were with Hurney's exit the first time around.

Also that list is completely arbitrary and I'm sure half of those guys won't even be on anyone's radar in a year or two because that's the way the NFL works.

Gettlemans legacy isnt what it had began to look 2 years ago.

But

Lets pump the brakes with that PFF top 25 and Gettleman

Lets break this list down a little more and show what was left off in the OP.

Correct there were

3 Saints

2 Bucs

1 Falcon

The only one on there that id give in a Gettleman argument is Deion Jones for the Falcons

The Bucs- Winston went #1 overal and Evans #7 overall.

Gettlemans only had 1 top 10 pick and that was his last draft in CMC.  His other 1st round picks were #14, #28, #25, #30. You would hope to draft the better star at #1 and 7 vs your rival at 28 and 30

The 3 saints were 3 rookies,  yes after 1 year.  Do we just forget the past here?  I do think Kamara and Lattimore (11th overall pick) are going to be studs but lets wait atleast another year to crown them

Do we remember once upon a time.  There were guys by the name of KB on there, Bene on there, Tre Boston on there.

KB after his Rookie season was up there with Evans if not higher and on this same top under 25 list.  He came into the next training camp and dominated what ended up being the top DB in the league in camp.  Then a ACL injury, then hasnt been the same.

Bene Benwikere- Ill just leave this here

"Over the final eight weeks of the regular season, Pro Football Focus rated Benwikere as the best cover corner in the NFL.[18] During the Panthers playoff victory over the Arizona Cardinals, Benwikere gave up only one reception for 21 yards for the game.[19] On January 13, 2015, Benwikere was named to the ProFootball Focus 2014 All-Rookie Team. He was also named to the All-Rookie teams for both ESPN and Sports Illustrated. For his rookie season, Benwikere allowed a rookie-low 72.9 opposing quarterback rating, no touchdowns, and was the third best in the NFL in the yards per reception allowed in 459 regular-season snaps."

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bené_Benwikere

Bene was high on this same list following his rookie season.  He was even on all the draft redo's the next year was top 20 on them.  Bene went onto have a big injury fracturing his leg and just wasnt the same.

So lets pump the brakes a little on some of these year 1-2 guys
