Falcons tell Julio Jones to suck it

Maybe you don't know much about contracting.  Contracts have all sorts of clauses that give them the opportunity to release a player.

We know this because NO PLAYER has ever filed a suit for breach of contract.   Read again.  BREACH of CONTRACT.   There have been other lawsuits but not because of Breach of Contract.

If a player (agent) adds a clause that says he can renegotiate after so many years than good for him.  Then he can and would have leverage.   This isn't the case with Julio or it would have already been in the press.

Julio agreed to 6 year deal at 14 mil per season.  Atlanta said they would look to renegotiate after 2018.    Either way they are in control because Greedy Jones is on the hook for 3 more seasons.   He can demand a trade, he can sit and he can drop every pass thrown to him and he is still Atlanta's bitch for the next 3 seasons.

I hope they do renegotiate because that will hinder them getting other good players.  If I were Atlanta I would tell Julio to be ready to play.  If not, retire but we will own your right for 3 years.

Honor was the incorrect term.

Teams can cut a player that is due money per the contract. I think guaranteed money is the way to go

I always LOL at threads like this.  As if the people calling Julio greedy wouldn’t be seeking a raise themselves if they had the opportunity to do so.

It’s crazy the standard people hold athletes at that they don’t hold to themselves. Like Julio is looking for a raise... who the hell cares? Who doesn’t want a raise?

Do you support teams cutting players prior to contract completion?

Yup that door swings both ways. JJ is in his prime and should get paid as such. Matty Ice without him is basically a older Jameis Winston.

I don't support anyone losing their job.

However, if you sign a contract that gives the team an out, then so be it.  Many of these 5 year deals are nothing more than 2 or 3 year deals...I'm pretty sure the players and the agents know that when signing.

Whatever is "guaranteed at signing" is the guarantee.  The players have very little control with the new CBA, if they want more, they will need to put that into the next CBA.

Here's where I am with this stuff.

I don't blame/shame the player for asking for more money, they are well within their right to do so.  I also don't blame/shame the team for telling him/them no.  They are well within their right to do so.

Correct.  But as an employer, you want to keep your top performers happy.  Julio can just fake an injury and Falcons are required to pay him.

They can cut him, trade him, or pay him.  The team has options, JJ doesn't, unless he doesn't want to get paid, and is interested in returning some of his signing bonus.

He has plenty of options. He can sit out and make the Falcons lose a few games, he can force a trade this season, or he can disrupt a team by taking care of himself this year and demand a trade next year. I'm sure TO will show him how to get his cash.

I seriously doubt Julio is going to sit out any games.

And Ryan’s record as a starter before Julio was drafted? 33-13..An older Jameis? They’re not similar in any facet.

I hope no one takes spelling that seriously on here or I am in big trouble. With autocorrect and tiny phone keys and fat fingers, I have lots of errors in my posts. I hope people focus on the content and not the grammar. After all this is a football message board not an English class.

depends on if they agree with you or like you … if they like or agree with you, your good, if not, they are going to point it out

I just hope it causes a locker room fiasco.

I don’t blame either the player or the team. Yeah, Julio is drastically underpaid, especially after the ludicrous money that was thrown at some relatively mediocre WRs this offseason, but he was paid good market value at the time he signed that contract. If players want more flexibility they need to sign shorter contracts but that will also mean less guaranteed money. Everything in life is give and take. From the Falcon’s perspective he’s still under contract. He agreed to the contract. Heir only incentive to give him (a lot) more money is to keep him happy and preserve a healthy locker room. But that would also be setting a precedent and opening Pandora’s box for other players to do the same to them in the future.

It’s a sticky situation. I hope it gets hideously ugly.

let him get a real job for regular 40 hr work week then ask him if he wants his old contract to catch a football for 14 million a year, he will jump at the chance.... EVERYBODY, including the owner gets way to much money to play a game, even if it is i game i love to watch... I dont feel sorry for any of them... If JJ isn't happy with 14 million to catch a football , tell him construction companies are looking for help

    • THIS PERIOD IS WERE WE FIND OUT IF THE ROLL OVER AND DIE or if they NUT UP AND WIN THE GAME and make this a series...  And i for one think a lot of this is mental WINNING one here will be a HUGE CONFIDENCE BOOST. And florida is getting worn down you can see it.
    • Eh idk about this. He’s a 100 point player in the toughest market in hockey. Not to mention, guys seem to play more freely once they leave Toronto. I’d be willing to bet that Marner could unlock Svechnikov. I’d go hard after both Marner and Bennett in the offseason.
    • I’m not going to sit here and say he played “amazing” in this game against the Eagles, but you’re selling this performance short. Stats do not tell the whole story here.  If Leggette doesn’t drop that late 32 yard pass, Bryce ends up with 223 yards and 2TDs and doesn’t end up with 2 additional incompletions after that drop trying to force things to the end zone at the end of the game. So that’s be 20-32 instead of 19-34, good for a 62.5% completion percentage. His YOA would be 6.96 and his QB rating would have been 91.2. And the story everyone is talking about after the game is how Bryce led a game winning drive to beat one of the best teams in the league, the team we did not know at the time would become Super Bowl champions.  But none of that happened all because of an awful drop by Leggette, something totally out of Bryce’s control. Bryce played well that game.
