POSSIBLE PS additions

Obada fans need to stop celebrating the roster spot--there will be a S, T,  and possibly at QB (guessing) added---the PS has a rent-free room for Obada only if they choose to move a DE (we have 6 right now).  If we add 2 players to the roster, Obada may not stick.

From our roster, the following stand out (THESE ARE SPECULATIVE):

RB Reggie Bonnafon  (looked good catching and running the ball Thur--good backup for CMC?)

DE Daeshon Hall   (if he is not picked up by another team---I think a 3-4 team could take him)

QB Kyle Allen   (radical idea, but we are carrying 2 QBs--we need a young guy on the PS)

TE Jason Vander Laan

G Taylor Hearn

C Kyle Friend  (Friend is strong and was pretty good in the run game--not sure if he can play anything except C)

CB Cole Luke  (They almost have to have a CB on the PS roster as it stands now)

WR Austin Duke

DT:  Player from another team's cuts

OT: Player from another team's cuts

I wonder if him making the initial 53 has any effect on his international designation.  Does it take away our ability to use an 11th PS spot on him if we release him after the cut deadline?  Hopefully, he'll stick so it won't be an issue.  But it would suck to keep him, then have to bump another guy in order to get him back on the PS.

Obada is not getting bumped imo. Andre Smith would be the most likely. After Williams and Seymour come back from IR, depending Obada or even Cox Jr maybe indicate which might stay. Do not forget Jacobs or Norris! LB position is just as loaded as any. There are many variables. Obada might, might not get cut but to single him out due to fans pulling for him might reflect a halo effect in desicion making.

Jacobs vs Norris is one battle of special teamers.

Smith vs Carter Jr would be another battle.

Cox Jr vs Obada will be another to keep an eye on of course.

Until IR temps come back those are battles during the first 8 weeks or however long till IR temps are eligible to come back and play again.

Cole Luke over Doss?  Don't be silly!

I believe keeping him on the 53 has nullified that international exemption. And honestly I don't think the team would be making SUCH a big deal if his making the roster only to demote him immediately.

So, we'll have only 10 PS guys.

Here's my guess

QB: Gilbert if eligible / unclaimed. Allen if Gilbert not available

RB: Bonnafon

TE: Baylis or Vander Laan (depends on Vander Laan's health)

WR: Frazier if available

OL Clausell + ??  Two guys for sure, but not sure who gets #2.  Bisnowaty? Eaton? Johnson?

DE Hall if available

DT Norton

DB: Doss, D Cox

Allen over Gilbert?

  • Two reasons--Allen is younger and (arguably) has more upside (even though I do not think he will ever succeed with that The Golden Calf of Bristol throwing hitch) and I was not sure if Gilbert had any PS eligibility left.

Obada represents a lot of things bigger than football--he has to be an inspiration to teammates and will be a fan favorite.  I tend to agree with you--my speculation about him was based on the PS international player spot, nothing more.

I was actually happy FOR YOU when he made the team--my first thought.

    • Hard to say--they are very unpredictable--this article came out last night---after our comments:  (ESPN)   How has the NFL approached NCAA players with gambling violations in the past? David Purdum, sports betting reporter: Quarterback Hunter Dekkers and wide receiver Kayshon Boutte were found to have committed gambling violations while playing college football, and both were allowed to pursue NFL careers. Dekkers was the projected starting quarterback at Iowa State but was ruled ineligible ahead of the 2023 season after an investigation found he had bet on at least one game involving the Cyclones (among other wagers that violated NCAA bylaws). The bet was just $15 on Iowa State to beat Oklahoma State in a 2021 game in which he did not play, but it led to the end of his Division I career. He played one season at Iowa Western Community College in 2024 before signing with the Saints as an undrafted free agent, and he spent last season on the practice squad. Boutte was arrested in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, in January 2024 on charges of underage betting while at LSU. The arrest came roughly eight months after he had been drafted in Round 6 by the Patriots, and the charges were ultimately dropped. According to police, Boutte placed more than 8,900 wagers from April 2022 to May 2023, including betting on at least 17 college football games -- at least six of which involved LSU during that span. The NFL did not discipline Boutte.
    • He did himself more harm than good by engaging in this ridiculous legal battle. One it brought to light how much gambling he was actually doing and two it made him a very unlikable figure from a public perspective because he was challenging the perceived sanctity (lol) of college sports. Then to make things worse his lawyers convinced a very stupid and very gullible old boomer judge to agree with him. Now he’s a lightning rod entering the league and that’s not a good place to be.
    • He went through the treatment program, fwiw if anything, and my focus is on his size, decision-making (on the field, not phone), and his arm strength.  But drafting a QB with an addiction that could get him Pete Rosed is not ideal.  I am not satisfied that the Panthers have (as Canales has stated to be important) addressed the QB spot with competition since Bryce has been here. Should Bryce not continue to improve or should he become injured, are we going with Pickett?  Pickett had 45 pass attempts with the Raiders last season and was sacked 8 times.  He has an NFL career where his interceptions are equal to his TDs.  He is not good.  H. King could emerge as the backup, if that tells you anything, but if we can pick a player with NFL starting potential (Sorsby would have been rated ahead of Ty Simpson (drafted #13 overall) in 2026 and he is rated #3 overall in the strong 2027 QB draft class, behind Manning and Moore--again, this would give Sorsby a first-round grade.  If I am Morgan, and I do not feel 100% confident that Bryce is the future, I might offer a second rounder for Sorsby.  I think he might go before that, frankly.   Some will say I am crazy, but to get a QB with Sorsby's talent in the 2027 draft, we may need to move up in round 1.  If Bryce steps up, you have a solid backup.  Regardless, I would sleep better.
