"We'd never do that"

Weren't you the one that told me that signing him in itself would be a political statement?

No. Someone else said that but I forget who.

What I said was the teams don't sign players for the purpose of making a political statement. They sign players to help them win football games.

That's why Reid was signed too.

I'm a fan of the Reid signing, but I'm not a fan if Tepper was leaning on Marty and Ron to do so.

Now, if Marty called him and said "hey, we need this guy, Ron wants this guy, are we good to make an offer" and Tepper gave them the go ahead, I'm super excited.

If Tepper called a meeting with Ron and Marty, said he didn't like the way the back end of the defense was playing, and leaned on them to sign Reid...then I'm going to be pretty bummed out.

We will likely never know...that said...that's what we used to say during the previous regime.

Why would you be bummed?  I don’t see an issue with an owner pushing a signing. You don’t think JR ever pushed a signing or draft pick?

“After we put Da’Norris Searcy on injured reserve, Ron (Rivera) and I [ Hurney] discussed our options, and Eric was at the top of our list. He is a physical safety with good ball skills and play-making ability.”

A league source told the Observer that the two began discussing available safeties on Monday morning. With Reid the obvious option, Hurney made the call to Reid’s agent on Tuesday to begin contract discussions. They flew Reid in on Wednesday. Panthers owner David Tepper approved the decision that day, a source close to the process told the Observer.

What I see with this move, actually a few things

a team  that wants to win and win now

a team that didn’t want this asset to go to teams in its division also in desperate need of safety help and they hurt them by taking the best player available before the other teams did

the management sending a message to its players that times have changed and we believe this guy can help us win now

taking realistic look that what they have cannot keep up with the NFC south and east

I see smart  first time in a long time  smart

will it work, who knows but as the saying goes ‘keep doing what you have always done and you will get what you always got ‘

It's because he doesn't want a Jerry Jones kind of owner, and that's a valid opinion.

Now to be fair, a hands on owner isn't a bad thing in itself if they have a clue what they're doing. Jerry Jones doesn't. If Tepper does, that's a different story.

That brings up a question too.

It's been said before that Jerry Richardson had to give approval for most team transactions. I don't know that he necessarily was consulted any time they signed a guy to the practice squad, but you can figure the ones that meant anything had to go through him.

Reid's signing has some controversy attached, so it makes sense they'd talk to Tepper first. But I wonder how much leeway Tepper is giving as far as transactions in general.

He's still actively engaged in running his hedge fund, so it'd make me think that he's leaving most of the football stuff the people in the building. That could change as he transitions more into being an NFL owner, but I'd guess that's how it is for now.

There is no legitimate reason to be against a player kneeling.

That's kind of one sided ain't it? I think the biggest problems with a lot of debates is people have a opinion on something but refuse to try and look at the other side. when I debate about something I have a strong stance on I look, study, and listen to the other side. hell I might find i'm actually wrong and change my mind about something. Most people wont do that. they rather die than admit they were wrong. but I also won't debate such things on a message board. lol

Don't think I'm trying to say your right or wrong, just asking you to think about it. My personal feelings about it is a person should do what they think they should do as long as its not hurting a person or a cause.

    • Which is why I'm all for trading Lamelo. Guy misses half of every season. I swear he just likes to sit on the bench to show off his street clothes. I think it negatively impacts the other guys who do the same. If guys don't want to play, they don't need to be here. Coach and gm need to get stricter
    • See, I have a different view of it. I think that just the opposite is very true, and often proven on our very own team.  Look at the impact that CMC had when he was here.  Look at how bring in two top rate IOL to play guard last season made a huge difference in finally getting a stable front for Bryce to live behind. It took a while for it to bear fruit, but those last games were just relevatory. And off ball linebackers like Luke Kuechly, not just running a defense but dictating the game when he's on the field, truly remarkable what a difference that makes. Personally, he had as much or maybe even more to do with that Super Bowl appearance as Cam did.  What I see in the NFL is teams trying hard to cover up for a lack of good linebackers by stacking the D-line. But it gives them a crust defense, one that is hard and crunchy on the outside but a feast within. Linebackers shouldn't just rule the middle of the field, but should be directing traffic and working as enforcers.  But hey, whatever. "Devalued" positions often come back to bite you in the ass when they are neglected. Ask anyone who has had to clean up the mess left behind by a former college coach who took over a pro team and brought their college recruiting mindset in. Yanno, like Matt Rhule did.
    • I see it this way--XL was raw.  Raw players when drafted who are forced to start immediately are very raw players in the NFL-- How is he helped? TMac will shift the focus of the defense away from XL.  XL will be more experienced.  He will have an offseason of jugs work.  He is a very good athlete.  He can only get better.  Wallace?  Same thing.  He will get better with an improved defensive front and the addition of these heat-seeking head hunters at S.  I think about the players we will have on defense in 2025 that we did not have in 2024. Derrick Brown. DE Brown III NT Wharton DE Jones Edge Moehrig S Princely. Edge Scourton. Edge Ransom. S Cam Jackson NT Roseboom  LB While we may not know what we have, we know what we don't have--
