Random Thoughts On Gano's GW FG

*Am i the only one that thought if Rivera was certain 63 yards was comfortably in GG's range today, then what about all of the times in Rivera's tenure that we've punted when even closer than 63 yards?  I get that these were more "do or die" circumstances, but still...  i vaguely recall several contentious times that we've punted when a little over 50 yards out, even at home.  Interesting.

*I was ecstatic Gano hit that kick, but was selfishly hoping he had tied the record for the longest FG as well.  Well, he didn't hit 64 yards, but he did tie the record for longest GW FG with the previous longest FG record holder, Tom Dempsey.  So, he's still in the record books for a phenomenal kick.

SN: IMO, record kicks set at mile high shouldn't count anyway.

I remember when lots of huddlers we're bitching about the money we gave Gano and how folks wanted to dump him for Butkur. I kept saying he was a great kicker and worth the money. Kicks like today are the reason why he was a probowler and worth the contract. Now everyone knows what I have been saying.

You weren't the only one. Still, even after last year, some people still bitch. Gano has been great! He's never really been bad.

Most anyone would have to admit today's kick was a maybe 20% chance of success. Lucky for us it was good. There was a lot of stupidity by the coaching staff leading up to it.

Today Gano's kick was a season saver. Kudos to him, I have an exponentially higher level of confidence in him than I did 2 seasons ago today. He has matured.

He was really bad in 2016 but was injured and has more than made up for it since then, and he was great before 2016.. only clutch kicks I can remember him missing are the Aints playoff game last year (but made up for it with a 58 yarder just before half), and Broncos loss to start 2016. Maybe others but none stand out, and he was great last year and clearly a beast so far this year even before today's kick.

I'm not entirely convinced that Rivera thought Gano would make it. I have to believe that something got fugged majorly up in those last couple of play calls and that going for the 63 yard field goal ended up being their only choice. I don't think they were playing for a 63 yard field goal intentionally.

You try that kick at the end of the half or game. Missing a 63 yard field goal when there is time on the clock gives it to the other team on your side of the 50

That is what folks are missing in the discussion. If you miss it, the other team has to go 15 yards and they are in field goal position themselves. So you dont just kick it at any time in a game, you do it when you have to have the points like today.

    • Most EVs are in the 90+ e-MPG meaning some measurement house somewhere compares the EV to a similar ICE model and works out how much is costs to charge (on average) versus fill up as a point of comparison. Talking long term, in the hundreds of thousands of miles?  No clue.  Some early signs are that EV batteries maintain 80% charge over 400k miles.  So there's that.   The challenge and charm of an ICE vehicle is being able to park it under a tree, get your jack stands out and tinker with your engine.  There's just not that same level of complexity in an EV.  I saw someone estimate there are 200 or so moving parts in an EV, and 2000 in an ICE vehicle.  I'm not a part counter so I can't really speak to that. I think that the EV is more the future than any type of combustion engine.  Those will still be around in specific purposes, but for most people - an EV will be the superior option in terms of efficiency.  I say that as someone who loves stupid horsepower numbers out of turbo 4 bangers and inline 6s...  I am one of those tinkers when I can be. A bigger issue for EVs is going to be the ownership versus lease.  Right now, there are INSANE leases on EVs, which is great, but what do you have at the end of that lease?  Nada, maybe some equity if you're lucky.  Where as I'm almost done paying for my car, and plan to keep it until the wheels fall off (or my son wrecks it when he starts to drive).  Will EV makers do the smartphone thing and build in planned obsolesce?  Stop updating software?  I love the tech in EVs, and I think getting more cars and trucks off the road is a good thing.  But I am still just a little concerned.  Capitalism has gotten far too extractive.
