Once again, your numbers are way off.

Except they aren’t... if anything they are slightly off because we don’t know the exact salary cap for next year.

Kalil’s full cap hit next year is around 6.7% of the Panthers cap. Replacing his $12M cap hit with Norman’s $15M bumps that up to around 8%.  Now you have to add Kalil’s $9.8 dead cap hit back on that and it’s split up over 2019 and 2020. That in itself would essentially be 10% (maybe a little less) of the Panthers cap.

When we cut Kalil(as a post June 1) after the season, we will have 14.7M of dead cap to account for. 4.9M goes on 2019. 9.8M in 2020. That’s it. It’s not changing.

And Josh Norman would not require a 14-15M cap hit for any team that trades for him. It would be only his base salaries of 11M and 12M(with no guaranteed money). Big difference. But still too much.

Norman ain’t coming back until his contract is up or he’s cut.

Kalil’s cap hit jumps up to $12 mil next year and then $15 mil the following year. If you add Norman’s $15 mil hit for the next two years then you would have $30M tied up in two players while trying to replace or resign guys like Davis, Peppers, Kalil, Adams, Funchess, Horton, Love, Williams, Mayo, Byrd, Obada, etc. Next years free agency class will be the largest in quite some time for the Panthers with 27 players set to hit free agency.

Even if we were to use Kalil’s out at the end of the year his dead cap is still $9.8M. Coupling that split dead cap along with Norman’s $15M cap hit would have the Panthers using around 12% of their cap space to make one player go away while overpaying another.

If he was traded then the Redskins would need to take Torrey Smith and Norman would have to agree to a pay cut, a restructure wouldn’t fix anything. If a trade like this did go down then it all but guarantees Kalil being cut as the Panthers couldn’t carry both players at their full cap hit.

Anyone wanting to trade for Kalil? What a ridiculous contract. It baffles me every time.

For us, trading him is actually worse. It would accelerate his cap hit to this year instead. Just keep him on “menopause” leave.

Sorry you are right.

I was looking at the 2020 column when the dead cap drops to $9.8M and didn’t realize that Norman’s base was less than his cap hit.

So 2019 would be a total of around $15M for the two (say 8% of the cap for 2019) and 2020 would be around $22M for the two (10% or so of the cap). Don’t know if the Panthers would do that.

You just have to look at Kalil as a sunk cost and can’t tie him to another specific player like you are doing by combining him with Norman. That money is gone. You make every decision knowing that going in.

Ideally yes but my comment was based on the fact that because of how high his (Kalil’s) hit is starting next season l, I don’t know if we could get both players on the roster (even if Kalil was cut). The Panthers have a starting or very good depth at DE, LB, C, FS, SS, WR, LT, RT all hitting free agency next year and then you have Addison’s, Bradberry’s, and Thompson’s contracts to worry about next year.

I don’t think we could afford to take on Norman unless he was cut and signed for a super team friendly deal because of the Kalil contract.

Saw the Thomas tweet  Not a good night for Norman. He got roasted both on field and off.

Regardless, I don't see any real possibility of the Redskins cutting him this year. Next year maybe, but we'll see.

for what it's worth, all this means he is likely to come into this Sunday's game pretty pissed off.

Shutting down starting receiver Torrey Smith shouldn’t be an issue.

But they already know what’s coming off of next year for Kalil. 4.9M That’s it. Not ideal. But not crippling. There’s a reason he’s not playing and it isn’t his “knee soreness”. He’s done. Barring an injury or two at OT. Whether it be Norman or anyone, there no If to it. Throw 5M out the window and work with it.  There is no scenario where his cap hit next year is more than that unless we are dumb enough to put him on the field and he gets injured. Then we are screwed.
