The coming offseason

(I've said this in a couple of different places so I decided to just go ahead and put it in its own thread)

The coming offseason is likely to be an important one for the Panthers.

We'll have current starters (Devin Funchess, Mike Adams, Chris Clark) and longtime stalwarts (Ryan Kalil, Thomas Davis, Julius Peppers) possibly / probably moving on, or being moved on from. There will also be free agent decisions (Funchess, Darryl Williams, Eric Reid) and decisions on what to do with important positions (give Kawann Short and Dontari Poe another year? Continue to trust Graham Gano? stick with Matt Kalil or dump him and start Taylor Moton on the left?) and since there are relatively few players already under contract for next season, a fair amount of cap space.

For these reasons and more, there's a strong chance the Panthers roster will look very different next year. We're set up for a large scale overhaul, and the decisions that are made this offseason have the potential to affect the Panthers for several years down the road.

So here's what we have to ask ourselves...

Do you trust our current leadership to set the Panthers up for the foreseeable future?

To borrow from an old Bill Parcells analogy, right now, Ron Rivera is writing the shopping list, Marty Hurney is the one doing the grocery shopping, nd once the ingredients are in place, Rivera and his staff make the meal.

I'm probably the world's worst cook, but even I wouldn't allow either of those guys in my kitchen. Neither do I think it's enough to simply replace one of them. I think we have to go with a completely fresh start.

Now I know some will say that's scary, and it's understood. There's no way to know for sure whether a new coach or a new GM will be better than what we have. There is even the potential that they could be worse.

But here's the thing: We already have guys in place who just aren't up to the task. And if I have to choose between starting over with somebody who might be bad but might be good or sticking with somebody who I know isn't good, I'm going to take Option A every time.

if you're unhappy with what we have now, imagine how you'll feel after five more years of the same people running the team.

I am just not down for that.

So you tell me: Are you willing to trust a major roster shake up to the people who brought you this season so far, are you ready to part ways with one but not the other, or do you want to clean house?

Make your case.

Keep Williams and keep Clark. Ditch Kalil. Draft another OT or a cheap FA. Williams and Moton will be starters going forward. Clark can be depth with starter experience at LT-- if Williams injured Moton moves back to RT, if Moton injured Clark can just step in.

Keep Gano but either draft another kicker in the 6/7th or UDFA to legit compete-- should probably do this every year Gano is here from now on. He should never feel comfortable.

Let Funch walk-- we've seen enough and we've got a couple of stars in the making. Wait and see what WR market looks like before cutting Torrey-- if it's expensive again, keep him and let him be the vet. If cheap, see if we can upgrade.

Keep Eric Reid and cut Searcy. Reid has the attributes we want in a guy and can be a leader. With a full offseason within the team and being back in football without any breaks, I think he can be better next year. Keep Adams, but we need a true replacement for him ASAP-- don't dilly dally with Gaulden if he can't take the step. Either a top rookie or a solid vet.

Ryan Kalil-- looks like we have the replacement in the building, but we'll need a new back-up who should be capable of competing for the starting role at C. Might need to draft someone (maybe a G/C combo to compete for LG if the C spot gets wrapped up).

Keep Cockrell-- we have no idea what we have and he seemed like a solid option. Might need to bring in a FA at nickel or draft another guy who we think can start. Captain should be cut, he's done here and not sure if Corn is the answer, but he'll be competing.

Keep Poe and Short, probably ditch Butler and retain Love. We need to draft a space eater.

DE-- Peppers is done let him retire. Addison is at his ceiling. We need to land a stud somehow, someway. Getting a stud here will make a big difference.

LB-- keep Shaq. Davis will play another year and Shaq can't be trusted, but he's better than no one. I think we need to be looking for a fast guy in the draft-- someone like Telvin Smith (who we should have drafted to replace Davis in like round 4).

RB-- ditch CAP. Find a big guy who can catch to bruise the defense next to CMC.

I think you need to start looking at stuff like this now if you're Tepper.    Does it really matter if we make playoffs?   Rivera is not getting us over the hump.    Unless he's completely a different person and this defense becomes 85' Bears then it's just time to move on.

People also aren't mentioning Olsen, I don't think it's a given he's back.

Here’s my thought.

If we lose the next couple of games I’m all in for a complete overhaul. Im good tanking and giving guys like Samuel and Moore more PT. Im also good for cutting/not bringing back all those vets, and not resigning most guys. The idea is to free up cap room.

Im also in the camp that if we do truely lose out the next few, Fire Ron, let Norv take over. That way we get an early jump on interviewing and hiring our next coach.

At the same time begin interviewing GMs and part ways with Hurney early off season.

Im ok having a down year next year while having a mid range high pick in 2019, and a high pick in 2020.

    • Per Bill Barnwell  Broncos part ways with a CB on the roster bubble Broncos get: 2026 seventh-round pick Panthers get: CB Damarri Mathis The Broncos have a rare problem among NFL teams: too many cornerbacks. ESPN's Jeff Legwold projects they could move on from Mathis, who was very good as a rookie in 2022 before losing his starting job after the defense's slow start in 2023. He played just 27 defensive snaps after Week 6 that season and 80 more across 10 games in 2024. With the Broncos using their 2025 first-round pick on cornerback Jahdae Barron, they could justify moving on from Mathis, who might not be active on game days even if he sticks around. Mathis' best season came with defensive coordinator Ejiro Evero in Denver, and he hasn't been able to reach those same heights since Evero left for Carolina. The Panthers are set with Jaycee Horn, Mike Jackson and nickel corner Chau Smith-Wade as their three starting corners, but Mathis could push the 28-year-old Jackson and serve as Carolina's primary reserve on the outside. Mathis is owed $3.4 million in 2025, so Denver might essentially buy a draft pick by eating some of that cash, similar to what the Commanders did when they sent running back Brian Robinson Jr. to the 49ers.
    • They can get fuged for a 6th and 7th. Doesn't make sense for us for anything less than a 4th and them paying a majority of his salary.
