Stop defending Cam

Smithers

Recommended Posts

He has more 4th quarter comebacks than Aaron Rodgers but he lacks the "x factor". Okay... go to bed, you're drunk.

The guy's shoulder is nowhere close tk healthy and it's obvious. Tepper has to step in and put an end to this madness. Cam needs to be IR'd and he needs tk be making the rounds to get multiple opinions from elite shoulder specialists. We have to figure out how to get him right and even if that is still possible at this point. The future of the franchise depends on it and delaying this process a couple more weeks to play him in a couple of meaningless football games would be absolutely moronic. Almost as moronic as this thread. Almost

When Delhomme fell off the edge of the map nobody was afraid to admit it nor were there many people here defending the indefensible play he gave us.  Why is is so difficult to see that Cam may be done and it may be time to move on ?

Because...

1. it's only been about 4 or 5 weeks of blaringly bad throws, progressively getting worse

2. Cam is a physical specimen and you have to give him a real opportunity to heal before you just give up on him

3. There aren't a bunch of Patrick Mahomes just sitting around waiting for the Panthers to give them a call

Again I’m up for discussion. Debating the franchises direction with Cam is exactly what this forum is for. But some of the posts people are making right now are extremely misguided in my opinion.

I haven’t banned anyone tonight with dissenting options for the record. But articulate your position and have a solid rebuttal. Don’t say Cam Iz dUn cUz nO fIrst Downz.

I expect better than that.

Because 5 weeks ago he was arguably top 3 in MVP voting? Because the OL has been hot garbage?  His shoulder needs repairing, but holy poo he's a little over a month removed from the best QB play of his life.

Cam deserves defending.

Is he 100%? I think that’s an obvious and emphatic no.

But trying to smear him at this point seems petty and less than genuine. He has had many, many, clutch performances for this franchise.

Seems like a lot of people continue to focus on the times he comes up short for the sake of confirmation bias instead of taking a truly unbiased lens to it.

Cam Newton is not without fault. But he has put a franchise that has been consistent only in its mediocrity in a position to succeed more than he has hindered it. That is 100% fact.

People forget all the times he turned garbage o line and receiver play into a first down time and time again and focus on one pay that was maybe missed.

Again, I’m up for discussion, but the Cam bashing tonight and through this season is outright embarrassing in my opinion.

Pretty sure nobody is going to call me a "nut hugger" but there are a couple of things I know.

One: Said it elsewhere. I've been watching football long enough to be able to spot when somebody's playing hurt. Newton is playing hurt. I have zero doubt in my mind of it.

Two: He's meant enough to this organization that he deserves the benefit of a doubt. I say do everything possible to help him get back to his true normal, not his "new" normal.

Three: The possibility that Newton can't get back to normal is real. That means that as a team, we have to be smart enough to accept that potential outcome, and plan for it.

Think that sounds harsh? Well, reality is harsh, and football is very harsh. But you still have to do what's smart.

(even if it sucks)

Get out of here with that cold, well-reasoned take... the huddle is no place for such educated, even-keel analysis...

Its really easy to come off as a nut hugger, when trying to discuss the issues.

This is the real reality right now. Cam is a great qb, and he has many levels of great that he can be as he gets older, its just been terribly mishandled.

There is also the possibility of him not recovering to that real level, but goddamn can we give him a chance to do so?

IIRC, Jake was already in his 30s when he suffered the elbow injury and had surgery.  Cam is not even 30 yet and has a shoulder injury...  we've seen QBs come back from shoulder injuries, we haven't seen many, if any, come back from Jake's elbow injury (Terry Bradshaw had the same injury and it ended his career.  Rob Johnson also had it and his arm was never the same).  Luck and Brees have both had extensive shoulder injuries, surgery, and recovery and appeared to regain all of their pre-injury arm strength...  but, they weren't rushed back to play for incompetent coaches like Cam was.

Give it a rest.  Let him get the right procedure and see how he does...  he clearly never healed completely from the first go round thanks to our incompetent staff placing all the weight of winning on his shoulders (irony) alone.

I played baseball in high school. Wasn’t good enough for college and was kind of a fug up but I could throw straight GAS. I later played in a rec league men’s softball team and used to hurt guys hands in warmups because I had a straight cannon. Fast forward to filling in on a Tuesday night league for a buddy of mine and I dived to catch a ball in the centerfield gap and my shoulder was done. I caught it though, so to make matters worse I hopped up to double up the guy on second that took off on a sprint. That was two years ago and the way I throw a softball is completely different because of that shoulder. I used to throw like cam. Mechanics weren’t great but I had HEAT. now I throw after the 90 of my shoulder and have no where near the velocity I used to. It’s to the point I don’t want to play anymore because that was my big gold star in my washed up rec league.

I don’t know if Cam poo is permanent but I can see the difference just in the throwing motion and it is substantial. Cam has always had poo fundementals but those throws were he is releasing before his arm gets to 90 with his shoulder are gone. He is making a point to release later and downward. I’ve done the same thing.

Again, Cam has a whole team at his disposal that some Wednesday night lower e rec league scrub like me could only hope for, but I can absolutely see the difference in release.

Were still mediocre. Weve never had back to back winning seasons. Cam has had some great seasons. Our 2014 playoff appearance was an anomaly. We were 7-8-1. 2013 was decent. 2015 was great until the SB....and 2017 was alright. That's like 3 good seasons..out of 7.

This right here is a valid argument and worth discussing. Congratulations on being one of the few that can articulate a dissenting opinion enough to warrant further talk. You’re a champ in my book.
