You hire a GM to decide the coach

Why has no one brought this up? Gettleman was hired and was told he had to stick with Rivera. This is an exception... not the expectation. Teppers first move needs to be hiring a GM. That GM can then decide the fate of Ron.

GM then coach. Not the other way around.

Been saying this for years . Gettleman got screwed being forced to take Rivera. Even hurney should have been given the option.

Problem with that is the GM search could take months. By the time it happens there wouldn't be any quality coaches left.

Unless Tepper already has a GM picked out.

I'm actually alright with Hurney making the calls because I know Tepper will pick. Rivera wasn't a terrible choice when we picked him but the game has left him over the years. We need a coach who can steer this organization towards the future and one that has good personal management.

I think Hurny needs to go or moved to another position.  But yeah I'm with you in Rivera liked it when he came here. But needs to go.  But he might be around another year.  Hard to say what Tepper will do.

It has been hashed over here:

Most of us that said Hurney goes used your same logic.  Well, except some subset of those who said Hurney goes because he is not Gettleman.

I just don't see how you keep both Rivera and Hurney knowing their track record. At this point one has to go and keeping both doesn't get you more wins next year.

There are quite a few owners who are also the GM even if the team technically has an actual GM.

I see no problem with Tepper picking a new coach he likes. I hope he has been looking into potential coach and GM candidates since he purchased the team. I doubt he fires Hurney and Ron and then decides "oh poo I should probably start looking for replacements".

If you are going to make a coaching change you might as well get a new GM too.

You could also say Hurney is gone just because of the JR connection he had with him.  Don't forget JR shoved the statue up his ass.  Keeping Hurney is just one more JR connection that Tepper has to live with.

Either way we could be in trouble.   Hiring a new GM might take awhile which means as @Squirrel indicated that could take months and no good coaches left.  OR Keep Hurney around until a new coach is hired but than you are looking at no decent GMs available.

I don't know how feasible it would be for Tepper to fire and hire both.  I would think the GM will be hired to make the team the way Tepper's wants it to be so hiring a coach himself won't be a bad idea. He could have an interim GM  to handle the contract of the coach Tepper wants.

This is one of the scenarios where Rivera may keep his job.  Assuming Tepper wants to remake the organization, and also assuming he does not have a GM candidate already picked out, if that process goes past the Super Bowl they would be behind the power curve in finding the right coach and would be better off sticking with Rivera.  As much as I think it is time for Rivera to move on, I'd rather have him than somebody who was named "the best of who did not get hired by anybody else in 2019."

Well to be fair, Frank Reich might have fit that title last year, and he hasn't exactly turned out to be a "consolation prize".
