Rapoport: Newton to sit

That photo makes me sad. He’ll come back strong next year. In the meantime we can watch Heinicke play like dogshit and the racists will say “BOUT TIME WE GOT A REAL QB”

14-25, 132 yards, INT, rushing TD later we’ll still read “WE FOUND OUR GUY” in a PanthersUnited thread and a separate e Cat Panther thread.

There are lot of questions to be asked, but the thought that sits in the front of my mind right now is this:

I always knew there was going to come a day when I watched the last Panthers game ever to be quarterbacked by Cam Newton.

If it turns out that either his shoulder injury is more severe than anyone knows or that he's going to wind up somewhere else rather than be extended here, then there's the possibility that last game we watched was it.

I absolutely do not want that game to be my last memory of Cam Newton's Panthers career.

But he’s under contract for two more years. He’s not going to be cut in the offseason. You’re welcome to debate me on this and I know you will as soon as you finish reading this, but that’s a bit extreme to think Cam’s career as a Panther is over only five games after he was in the MVP discussion.

I’ll tell you this, if he is cut, I better not hear anybody flame me for calling us the new Cleveland Browns, because that’s a 2015-17 Cleveland Browns move.

I'm not predicting. I'm talking about the possibility.

Like it or not, the real possibility exists that Newton's shoulder could be damaged enough to be career altering. It's also possible that Tepper could decide the smart thing to do is move on.

And no, it's not guaranteed that we'll be terrible if he does.

My hope is that Newton successfully rehabs this offseason and everything is fine after that. But being a Panther fan, I know we're not always lucky.

Bottom Line: Hope for the best, but prepare for the worst.

I understand it’s possible that Cam’s career is over as we know it. But I don’t think it’s likely at all.

Marty Hurney is to blame for his failure to acquire/draft/develop a backup to Cam.

Let's wait to see Heinecke play before we put this on Hurney.  If he comes in and balls out, it's on Ron. I personally think Heinecke is going to play well.  That kid has a certain it factor.

Also how much money do we want to tie up in the QB position?  I know that Cam has a pretty team friendly deal relative to other starting QBs, but how much money does a GM want to tie up just in QBs?

I really hope we didn't do further damage playing him these last few games in a wasted season.

Welp, Heinicke is my guy now. I really hope we can protect him. Don't want to see anyone get hurt. We need a big game from CMC if Heinicke is going to have a chance.

Well, I guess one bright side to all the practices that they decided to hold Cam out of is that at least Heinicke has had a bit of time before now to work with the starters. Don't know how much that will help but hey, even a few extra reps can help develop some chemistry between him and the WR's.

I agree. I thought he was just primarily managing pain and had scar tissue.

Cam is a physical specimen. This isn't a Bo Jackson injury (hate the Auburn reference) - it's actually not that uncommon. He'll return. He may actually be better for it, by getting serious about his footwork and mechanics instead of relying on just being a big BAMF.
