Observations on Heinicke

Mr. Scot

First impressions...

Probably worth noting that he's playing behind a backup starting left tackle. Chris Clark is available but Marshall Newhouse is starting. Gotta say though, having Christian McCaffrey as a weapon has got to be a nice thing for a young guy starting his first NFL game.

Fumbling the first snap was almost stereotypical. That's just how you'd write the story if this were a cheesy TV movie. The defensive penalty giving him another shot at the end zone was almost theatrical too.

Overall, that first drive was a thing of beauty. Loved the run for a first down. Pretty sure nobody saw that coming. He may physically look like a high school kid, but he looked like an NFL quarterback with his actions and his command of the field.

Storybook first touchdown as well, thrown in the middle of a bunch of  defenders to a backup tight end. Not necessarily surprising there. Backups sometimes have better chemistry with backups because they tend to practice together.

Honestly though, I think Heinicke showed good chemistry with everybody. He's very good at getting the ball out fast, but maybe sometimes a little too fast. He's missed an opportunity or two because he took his first read quickly.

Don't want to make too much off of a first drive, but I would say that touchdown throw tells me he's got a little bit of Jake Delhomme in him. A lot of Jake's best plays were more balls than brains. That's a double-edged sword, of course.

Hope his next several drives look good too. The Panthers have a habit this season of following up great opening drives with letdowns, but we'll see.

Not even a full quarter into his first regular season start, and he's already the next Delhomme?

Interesting how quickly things like benefit of the doubt change around here.

Well he’s a scrappy gym rat who’s just gritty as hell and a coach on the field. He really has the intangibles

    • Rico is 0%. I think we would really like to have Mays back but we have a value in mind and aren't willing to overspend. I think someone probably will so I think the odds are pretty low but not zero.
    • Damn I liked A'Shawn too. This is basically a heads up we're planning on cutting you move.  Robinson wasn't the best but I loved his attitude and effort on the field. He held that entire dline together when Brown went down iirc..granted we finished that season as the worst rushing defense in modern NFL history.  If Wharton would have performed up to atleast half of his salary last season, I'd feel a little better about it. We do need that cap space though.
    • 13. Carolina is coming. The Panthers are well thought of around the league. Their "process" seems sound. I think their off-season will be very interesting to keep an eye on. They made the playoffs, but they're not yet knocking on the door. (Offense was 26th in EPA/play.) I think it's imperative they don't overestimate where they are in their build. They can't throw a ton of money around in FA to "make a run now". They need to be intentional about building a solid foundation. (IMO) And from what I know about the team... I think they will be. Sidenote: I have my eye on offense there, not defense. They HAVE to leave next season with a strong opinion on Bryce Young. They need to put pieces around him to do that. Can't be left wondering what he would have looked like with "better OL play" or "more pass catchers". They have to know. (That part is purely my opinion. No one told me that.) https://x.com/lindsay_rhodes/status/2027212533417869499?s=46&t=xeIgh_-Vr2aKxBkBJdfnKA
