LOL! We need someone to tutor the person who was our DC....can't make this poo up. How about you should have brought in a real DC last year and he can mentor Washington.....i mean.....holy fug does Rivera never hesitate to make himself look like an idiot.

Probably about the same as our current FS play.

No, while there is no argument that Washington wasn't ready or able to be an efficient DC, he is most definitely one of the best DL coaches in the league.  That's what Rivera doesn't want to lose.  This is simply a way to allow Washington to save face while effectively taking a demotion to DL coach.  Washington the DC was fired, Washington the DL coach was retained.

Forget titles, Washington is the DL coach with Rivera the real DC.  Everyone's been saying this has been a Rivera defense all along, well, this year we will get to see an actual Rivera defense.

I get that, but similar shuffling has been done to protect Richard Rodgers also.

What exactly does he bring to the table that's of value?

I don't think there's been any shuffling to protect Rodgers.  I think he is here because he's friends with Ron, and I don't believe he has much influence on anything.  I believe much of what Ron says about his roll is just fluff to justify keeping his friend, despite him not having much authority.  I actually think he's a guy that people get all worked up about, but probably have no reason to.  He's basically a figurehead and helper.  Probably shouldn't be on the staff, but I seriously doubt he's negatively effecting it either.  Now that we have Fewell, our DB's should be fine.

In his defense, I will say that Rodgers does have a background as a DB coach.  I believe he was the secondary coach at Cal for several years at one point.  Not that it means he's qualified, just that he's probably not as unfamiliar and inept there as he was as a ST coordinator.

He started out as the special teams coach and was awful at it. Rather than being fired he was moved to assistant DBs coach.

This year he got promoted to DBs coach, and then when they started looking bad, his assistant was fired but he was retained.

Now he's being moved back to the assistant slot and another guy is being named DB coach.

That, to me, is a lot of effort to keep from firing one guy.

So now I wonder, if they look bad again, who gets fired this time?

Like I said, it's nothing more than Ron keeping a friend on staff.  I still don't think it means much or has a whole lot of effect.  He's a glorified assistant that probably won't grow any further.  Again, I think much of Ron's words regarding Rodgers is nothing but fluff.  IMO, Imamura was the guy they expected to be the actual secondary coach, but when he showed he wasn't the guy they let him go.  The only reason Rodgers was kept was because of his friendship with Rivera.  But if he was thought of as anything more than an assistant, they wouldn't have gone out of their way to interview and hire a legit secondary coach.  They would have just handed it to Rodgers.

I'm not arguing that Rodger's spot on the team is deserved, but I just don't think it is anything to get overly worked up about.  It doesn't cost us or the team anything (at least not anything that effects the cap).  And we all know that one of Ron's biggest weaknesses is his loyalty.  To me, this is much ado about nothing.
