So unless injured could be a one year deal. Guess its win win for both sides.

Yeah, it's fine. For Carolina, cheaper than franchising him, and gives them some control if he plays well and wants to keep him. For him, after having no market last year, he had to take it.

Per source, Eric Reid's new 3-year contract with the Panthers includes $9M fully guaranteed at signing, all paid out this year, plus $1M in injury guarantees for 2020. Full value of the deal if realized would be $22M over three years plus incentives, but no guarantee beyond 2019.

11:17 AM - 12 Feb 2019

I may be wrong, but this really sounds like we can indeed cut him after year one and only owe him the guaranteed $1 M in 2020. So, it is front end heavy rather than back end. Even better, in ways, than I expected. I want to see the official cap number this year but, ultimately, it is still a really good deal imho.

It also means that it'll be kinder to us if he plays well and sticks for 2020 and 2021, from a cap standpoint.

Speculation:
2019: Base $1,000,000, signing bonus $9,000,000 - Cap hit $10,000,000
2020: Base $5,000,000, injury guarantee/roster bonus $1,000,000 - Cap hit $6,000,000 (or only $1,000,000 if cut)
2021: Base $6,000,000, no guaranteed money - Cap hit $6,000,000

Of course, I'm not counting the extra incentives in there, so tweak the numbers a bit in one or a couple of the years.

Would that sound somewhat correct?

$10,000,000 does sound like a lot for this year, but I am taking into consideration that I really believe we are going to be using him more in the box and even on the outside in some of TD's roles moving forward. So he's not going to be a traditional SS in my opinion, and more of a hybrid player. Also, again, years 2 and 3 will be a bargain price when there are a few guys even this year that will jump Reid on the payscale for safeties when the dust settles (Collins, Clinton-Dix, Joyner, etc.) He'll probably still be in the top 10 overall for safety contracts this year, but the two years after he could slide to the mid teens/twenties.

Its 7.5m signing bonus is spread over the length of the contract but paid upfront. The other money comes from guaranteed base salary, the one million next year would convert to fully guaranteed at some point in the first few days of the new league year and also likely be part of the base salary. This years cap hit is likely to be somewhere around 5m counting the 2.5m sb and base salary, next year that number would likely rise to close to 8-9m against the cap. 5m would be left from the signing bonus and if he makes it to day 2-3, the 1 million for injury would be included in the cap hit at that point. It's highly likely he sees year 2 of the deal regardless. His base salary is going to be 15.5m roughly not counting his incentives and if they are considered lbte or not. "if they are lbte then they are counted as salary and then added back the cap after the season they aren't earned."

His average base salary for the deal works out to slightly over 5m a year, add in the signing bonus and you've come to 7.5m a season roughly on average. If incentives are hit then that inches a lot closer to 8m per season. Year one is likely a base salary of 1.5m or so.  Which means the other 14m from his base salary will be spread out in years 2 and 3. So his base salary for next season is likely to be close to 5-6m with 1m being guaranteed for injury till day 3 of the new year. The remaining 8-9m due in year 3 of the deal.

likely cap hits would be

2019 - 1.5m salary 2.5m signing - 4m total

2020 - 6m salary 2.5m signing - 8.5m total

2021 - 8m salary 2.5m signing - 10.5m total

These are based on the original values released from the NFL of 22m with 2m in incentives. A good portion of the incentives are going to be ltbe so I used 1m of the incentives in my contract above for a total value of 23.

Albert Breer on Reid signing:

5. Lots of reasons for folks to be happy that Panthers S Eric Reid got a three-year, $22 million deal from the team on Monday. But don’t mix this part up: He earned it. The coaching staff saw him as an ideal movable piece—he plays deep, underneath, at nickel linebacker, and man up tight ends and backs—for a defense that demands its safeties do multiple things. And he was a great mentor for a young corps of corners, helping fellow LSU Tiger Donte Jackson in particular.

The surprising thing about this comment is how our defense asks so much of our safeties.  But until now we never invested anything in them.  Hmmmm

So what does this mean for Searcy?  Can he play FS?  I know he dropped weight before when he came here.  Could we be set with Reid and Searcy?

And what does that say about the confidence in the Gualden draft pick?

Searcy will be cut any day now, it's an easy decision due to the fact that we save $2.5 million.

Searcy was a candidate for return from IR last season and was even practicing during the week but we never activated him.

We didn't activate him because we're going to cut him and we didn't want to risk him getting hurt again.

Coleman had a 3 year $17 million contract after the SB year. Not a huge diff considering it was 3 years prior.

I disagree to a point.  He is our only FS right now. He lost some weight to transition there when he came on. Maybe they sign someone else. Or draft someone.  But Gualden sure as hell cant play FS with his measurables.  He would be a good back SS. Maybe Parms.  But he hasn’t been healthy ever. So that would leave us Cole Luke starting a FS.  Although I have to say I would like to see him there. He still has to learn the position.  If I know RR he is rolling with Searcy and Reid.

Searcy is more of a box safety .. He isn't good in coverage or playing as the back end of defense...  And now with his concussion issues he isn't going be very effective doing that either.. We need to move on..

    • Yeah okay. We as an organization have been more patient with him than many. And there has been a small parade of guys drafted since he was, also to bad teams, that have passed him. Some have lapped him. As a fan I am out of patience but he gets this year it is out of my hands always has been. I just hope the bar is higher than it has been for him.    FWIW, XL dropped two passes last year. He did do some other bad stuff, just saying.
    • Except it takes those QB's a few years to develop because they needed to learn the mental side of the game and have it catch up to their physical attributes. Bryce was supposed to be a QB savant who already had a fully developed mental side of the game and that was going to make up for his lack of physical ability.  And his lack of NFL level QB physical traits has been clear as day to anyone who has watched him the last 3 years, mainly, he just doesn't have an NFL arm, he can't zip the ball into tight spaces or throw on a line down the field like is needed at this level.
    • Don’t recall seeing many of his interviews but what strikes me is that he engages and goes in depth. Even with the cliche answers as referenced by OP come across somewhat thoughtful.  Very likable personality despite being someone who can crush an average person like I can crush a paper cup. I knew Motons mother had a career at MSU but was looking on the google and found that Mushin Muhammad personally knew Motons grandfather.   His late grandfather was a professor at MSU.   Cool guy.  Interesting family and small world.
