How the NFL sees us

NFL also loves drama

And we lost most of that when Josh Norman was stupidly released by Gettleman...

And to be clear, I am not for drama for drama's sake, but Smitty and Norman brought personality to the team we haven't been able to replace.  They were also 2 of the best talents to ever play for the Panthers

And I know Cam is a personality, but that has already peaked and been played out (and that's not a knock on Cam)... I would be fine with the team having someone else who brought the personality/drama as long as their play matched it.

I remember back in my high school economics class one day we were discussing a guy who'd just won the lottery. Someone talked about how he'd gone from lower class to upper class.

"Not so fast", our teacher said.

He then set about explaining to us the differences between old money, new money and what he called "funny money", i.e. lottery winners. I recall him saying something along the lines of "just because you got lucky and won a few million dollars doesn't mean you get to hobnob with the Rockefellers and the Vanderbilts."

Compared to other franchises, we're still children. If we want a seat at the big boy table, we're going to have to earn it. Flash in the pans like 2015 aren't enough. We have to be consistent.

For those who like to take an "us against the world" mentality, this might provide some fuel for your fire.

The bolded list below (and the Bills, mentioned in the prior paragraph) would constitute what the NFL seems to consider our "peer group" based on prime time scheduling.

PFT: Low expectations and populations

Newton isn't the marketing gold mine that used to be. A couple of years of injury affected seasons and the emergence of guys like Patrick Mahomes have taken a lot of the luster away.

Luke might still move the needle a little, but let's be real. His profile at this point still boils down to "good player on a bad team". That only gets you so far.

Attitude doesn't really get you that far either unless you can back it up. You've got a guy in Donte Jackson who's certainly not afraid to talk trash, but Jackson is still one of those guys who both makes big plays and gives them up. Unless he becomes more of a lockdown guy, he won't be all that marketable either.

Marketing people would probably tell you the guy that pulls the most interest right now is Christian McCaffrey, but he's still relatively new on the scene. He probably needs another great season before he'd be known to a bigger national audience.

Very tru. I see Action Jackson being marketable, but only if he locks everything down. Like you said....

I got a little bit of a sense of where we stand watching the schedule release show on NFL Network.

They brought up the slate of Thursday night games and pointed to the Panthers-Bucs game as one that would be interesting.

Cool, right? I thought so too, until I heard them explain why.

It was because of the return of Bruce Arians to head coaching.

if you're wondering whether they said anything about the Panthers, I was waiting for that too.

I still am.

It was kind of deflating.
