I think the hybrid thing has left the building. Full 3-4 base

RR and everyone on the staff has said hybrid. Hybrid D's lack in some areas. We may just live with a lack of 3-4 DL. Have 3 guys starting there and only 2 backups.

Something that stands out to me when doing a chart for both 4-3 and 3-4 is Cox and Obada look to be strictly 4-3 DEs. I don't think we'll cut them because we need the depth for 4-3 ends, however we need to find a way to stash more 3-4 DEs on the roster. I don't think Jared Norris makes it too after doing this.

Obada is pho'king 6'6" and weighs 265. Also he runs a 4.6, has long arms, big wingspan, and has great bend. His 10yd split is 1.53 which pho'king elite for a 43 end or as a 34 olb.

Efe is an excellent role player and depth.

Addressed their top three needs? How could he think that the secondary (specifically safety) is not a top need? I seriously do not understand the mindset of our management sometimes. Its almost as if everyone else can see the deficiency's but they can't.

If you have paid any attention at all over the last 8 seasons, you would have noticed a very significant thing:  Ron Rivera places very little value in the safety position.

Tell me where he's getting play time in a 3-4 in front of these guys:

LOLB: Bruce Irvin - Christian Miller - Mario Addison
LILB: Luke Kuechly - Andre Smith
RILB: Shaq Thompson - Antwione Williams
ROLB: Brian Burns - Jermaine Carter Jr. - Marquis Haynes

I'm not sure what you're arguing. I said we shouldn't cut him because we need depth in 4-3.

It goes back even further to before he was at Carolina.

Misread, my bad.

If we are going 34, he still can be OLB.

We just do not have many 5 tech pieces and it is hard to see if we are going 34/hybrid/etc etc

You'll get run over playing 3-4 DE at 270 lbs.

With the 3-4 you need a HUGE 0-Tech and a couple of 300 lb'ers to play on the ends.

I was suggesting that he add 15 lbs or more--but I do  not see his frame handling it.   My question is--how many DEs/OLBs we can keep?  We have Irvin, Addison, Haynes, Obada, Burns, and Miller.  That is six.  If we keep Cox for use in the 4-3 only, that makes seven.  Not sure about the math--will take a look.  Maybe that is why we have not taken and DBs--we are not going to use any.

Not sure where everyone is plugging Carter so quick at OLB in a 3-4

Kid was a true 4-3 LB in college, no where near a edge rusher.  Would see Shaq playing before Carter

Jermaine Carter Jr is too small to be an OLB in a 34.

Antwoine Williams will not make the 53.

Well another thing to consider is he's only recently started football and has found his success at DE in the NFL. I think that's where we are going to keep him focused.

I have paid attention and you are correct.....and it pisses me off, especially considering that safety is the weak link of our defense.

    • I honestly can’t believe this team’s turnaround this season. It’s surreal. Figured healthy we’d be fringe playoffs and with another lottery pick could finally turn the corner, but we don’t even need that. This group is ready. We haven’t played remotely well the last 5 games and yet still blew out 5 bad teams by 16+ each game like it was casual practice. We had a few solid teams with Kemba and Big Al but this is easily our best group since the original Hornets moved to NO. Man, what a shift in culture this new ownership group and front office has brought. So damn happy to see it after years of suffering and consistently meaningless games in this stretch of previous seasons.   Only 2.5 games out of the 6 seed, although Miami, Atlanta and Orlando have been playing well too. Gonna be a fun final stretch, hopefully we can get a top 8 seed at the very least. Celtics tomorrow will be a good test. Would be huge to keep the road winning streak up against a very hot top team on the 2nd half of a back to back. We’ve played Boston pretty well the last few years with much of this same group despite sucking so I do feel pretty good about it. Kon is due for a huge game coming off a few cold shooting games (although despite the poor shooting he’s been contributing well with defense, assists and rebounds).
    • It amazes me how underrated Horn has become after he finally was able to stay on the field. Sure last year wasn’t perfect but he was still a huge reason for our rebound defensively and I’d say he’s easily a top 10 corner. You don’t want to see Mike Jackson as our top corner. Any player is available for the right price but I’d be extremely hesitant to move Horn even for a big haul from LA.
