He's a backup, and given Newton's shoulder issues it's pretty hard to blame the team for seeking to get the best backup they can.

You can argue that this wasn't the best way to go about it, but arguing that they shouldn't have done anything at all would be pretty silly.

I don't think I ever said it was a mistake to draft him

Any team would take a Qb 3rd or 4th round in the Panthers situation 

But the back up Qb is always the popular Qb

Let's be honest the people who never wanted Newton will feel like this  is the perfect opportunity to bring In The "right " guy

eh I'd argue Jim Rome isn't in the same category of that crap today. I listen to him and he doesn't put out hot takes for the sake of stirring the pot like most talking heads.

 

I think the hot take culture took off when Skip Bayless became wildly successful basically becoming a caricature of rabid sports fans. It made money and now here we are with a 24/7 cycle of saying controversial things because people tune in.

I don't know. Probably 98% of sports talk takes themselves and sports too seriously. I can really only think of 2 that don't. LeBatard and SVP. Ironically, in my opinion, those are two of the best in the business. I wonder if there's a correlation?

I think Grier is a QB project for the Turner's. They are going to tear down his mechanics and rebuild them. How successful he is as a player will be directly related to how successful they are with said project.

I think this is the case. I think of Grier as an Aaron Rodgers situation. He tumbled in the draft because of complaints about his throwing mechanics, just like Grier. Aaron threw from the ear, I recall being the big complaint when he was at Cal. Will throws with just his arm without putting his hips into his throw, which robs him of velocity.

Rodgers spent 3 years riding the bench behind Favre. Grier, likewise has several years to sit and learn behind a franchise QB, and generational talent. They weren't in a rush to get him on the field, and spent time correcting his mechanics.

Not saying we'll enjoy the same outcome as the Packers. But I'm also not not saying that's definitely what will happen.

 

 

Also, considering how this fan base has reacted to what was basically a 4th round pick, I can't even imagine if we had spent a first on someone like Rodgers when he wasn't going to start for years.

"OMG! WASTED PICK! Way to ignore our needs Hurney! Rodgers won't start for years! We should have drafted a FS! Hurney 2.0 ftw amiright? Idiot!"

It's not just the hot takes.

The thing with guys like Rome (and I include Mark Packer in this bunch) is that their shows aren't about sports. They're about them.

That's what makes them suck.

Yup. I'd never spend a first overall on a guy who's got one foot in two sports.
