A sneak peek at our Hybrid defense.

Recommended Posts

So the recent theory is we are going full 3-4. While I think we will play more 3-4 I really think we are going to see all kinds of fronts, with all kinds of players.  I happened to stumble on this on YouTube.  He does a really good job breaking down what we used last year from a Hybrid scheme.  Both 3-4 and 4-3.  Also makes a good point of showing that guys that we normally wouldn’t think about putting inside or outside.  We lined up Addison, Butler, Pep and others both inside and outside. It’s all bout creating confusion.

I am really looking forward to how this plays out this year.  And as long as RR doesn’t turn the keys over to Washington it should be really fun to watch.

We are running a 3-4 for sure. You don't draft Burns and Miller if you don't plan on using them to the best of their abilities. We have long athletic LB's who can rush the passer and have the ability to drop into coverage. We needed speed and we finally got it on defense. Burns is not a traditional 4-3 DE and not a 4-3 OLB(though he could probably play it), this pick was made specifically for a 3-4 defense. Drafting Miller in round 4 was the seal of approval.

*Forgot we also signed a 3-4 OLB in Irvin.

Very well done IMHO.

There seem to be a percentage of fans that seem afraid to let go of the 4-3.  I wonder why?

I'm sure all teams run some variations of the 4-3 and 3-4 regardless of what is considered their base.  Also I'm sure there are some that are more hybrid then others, but at a certain point I wonder if you are diluting your talent.

I'm fine with being versatile but here are only so many resources (draft picks and cap space) to go around.

I agree we will be running more 3-4 especially with the guys we selected.  But I also think we will see all kinds of fronts. Its not going to be an either- or.  Its going to be all of the above.

This was helpful, thanks!

Yeah I thought it was a really interesting look into what we did last year.  I think people just get stuck into the fact of running one or the other defense in their minds.

For instance above they pointed out that Irvin is a 3-4 OLB. He can be.  But he played at Seattle and Atlanta that run hybrid 4-3’s. And while Burns and Miller looks” like 3-4 guys right now I think they have the ability in the future to run an occasional 4-3  Would’t want to see it all the time but it will depend on who we are playing.

To be clear I would rather run a 3-4.  But we will change it up depending on the team and situation.

They just don’t have the personnel for an effective 4-3. The switch is necessary. And they have some pieces for it now

Very questionable about the personnel for a 3-4 as well. There is a good amount of talent in the front 7 but putting it all together is going to be unconventional.

After watching the video, I feel a lot more comfortable. RR and crew are going to surprise this year. If not, my dolphin friend will poo talk me all year lol

    • Sellers is absolutely one to keep an eye on. Could be the next Cam or could be the next Anthony Richardson. Curious to see how he has progressed come this fall.
    • I think Texas could go 0-12 and he would still go #1 based on his name and traits like you say.  But nusselman and sellers may be actually better qbs.    Man if bryce stinks it up this season its looking like a damn good year to swap out qbs.  Sellers highlights are just fuging jaw dropping
    • I mean, the kid comes from a wealthy family. It's not like he needs the money. He has a ton of potential now we get to see what he can do as a starter. Everyone penciling him in as the #1 overall pick is putting the cart way before the horse. It's 5% because of his talent and what he's showing on the field and 95% because his last name is Manning. And if he is what he's hyped to be the Texas coaching staff needs to be answering some tough questions about why the kid wasn't on the field sooner. Ewers was a good college QB but he's definitely not a "keep a future #1 overall pick waiting" type of college QB. Only getting one season out of a top NFL talent because you chose to keep him buried behind a borderline NFL talent is just coaching negligence. Not starting him as a true freshman? Yeah, I get that. But on year two if the kids is what he's hyped to be you gotta wish Ewers well elsewhere and turn the page.
