Could Kawann Short and Gerald McCoy be considered the best DT duo...ever?

I don't think it is at all.  I think this front 7 is substantially better than the 03 superbowl team, and that front 7 is regularly considered one of the best of all time.

Based on what? Luke is exceptional, Short and McCoy are Pro Bowl/All-Pro caliber players but what about the rest of that crowd is screaming "best of all time?" COULD that happen? Yes, but we are also talking about some guys near the end of their careers(Irvin), guys that are rookies(Burns), guys that half the fanbase wanted cut(Poe, Thompson), and guys that are adjusting to a new position(Addison).

Let's just calm down with the hyperbole. If they come out and produce at that level, fuging awesome! But maybe we don't need to set the stage for disappointment with the hype that we are a top 10 front seven of all time. That's just crazy.

The best ever?  You made me laugh.  Could they be the best ever for the Panthers?  We’ll see, that does not make me laugh.

But, ever?  When I think of those, the best I have seen are, in some order:

  • Vikings Purple People Eaters:  Alan Page and Gary Larsen/Doug Sutherland
  • Steelers Steel Curtain: Mean Joe Greene and Ernie Holmes
  • Rams Fearsome Foursome: Merlin Olsen and Rosie Grier
  • Chiefs 1969: Buck Buchanon and Curley Culp
  • Bears 1985: Steve McMichael and Dan Hampton
  • Cowboys Doomsday Defense: Harvey Martin and Jethro Pugh
  • Bucs 2002: Simeon Rice and Warren Sapp
  • Eagles Early 90s: Mike Pitts and Clyde Simmons
  • Jets Sack Exchange: Joe Klecko and Marty Lyons

That is some very rare air, and I am sure I am missing a few worthy of being added.

Who said best of all time?  I said top 10.  What about Irvin makes you think he's at the end of his career?  He's 31.  He's not a running back.

Out of that front seven there are 5 first round picks, and around 16 pro bowl appearances.  On paper they vastly exceed the '03 squad, who, like I said, has regularly been mentioned among the best of all time.  If you go back to my original statement, I already clarified that this is based "on paper".

Don't argue semantics, you know that I meant top 10. It is literally in that post. Irvin is pushing towards the typical age when you would expect to see a decline in production. That is something that could happen this year or in 3-4 years. It just depends on the individual players.

I understand the "on paper" argument but that 2003 squad was mentioned among the best of all time for their achievements on the field as a unit, not on paper. That's why I disagree about that assertion, it's a projection that isn't based on any actual play.

I agree that potential absolutely exists. The talent level is absolutely there. But it remains to be seen if that becomes a cohesive unit or if everyone plays up to their talent level.

You didn't read the part where I said this question came from another person, did you, nor the part where I said it's probably more realistic to assume that not to happen.

FWIW, it's one of you Falcon people who brought it up, not me.

It doesn’t even approach Donald/Suh of just last year, let alone all time lol.

Agreed.

That being said, I'm surprised the Saints didn't try to get in on McCoy, regardless of what Payton said. Achilles injuries are tough to come back from, especially for larger guys that are pushing off of them with a lot of weight.

Not that he won't be able to come back strong at some point (not career-threatening), but just that a lot of guys take a full calendar year to do so and Rankins tore his during the playoffs.

I just don't know how much the Saints will be able to count on him contributing this year.

Signing Malcom Brown was ok, but he certainly is not as good as Rankins IMO.

You guys are really going to need Davenport and Onyemata to improve this year to have as good of a defensive line.

Just like our secondary got exposed last year when our pass rush faltered, I don't think the Saints secondary outside out Lattimore is that good without an effective pass rush.

Regardless, you guys are still the team to beat, but I don't think the Saints are going to run away with the division this year like last year.

Well, from all accounts, Suh underwhelmed despite being beside Aaron Donald. Check his stats, and you'd be surprised.

Aaron Donald is a one man wrecking crew in general. But still something to think on.

I also think Suh didn't like not being the center of attention.  He is a talented player, but the fact that Tampa will be his fourth team (and his tenures are consistently getting shorter) says all you need to know.

I'm not an advocate for only signing Boy Scouts (which seemed to be the case with Richardson), but team chemistry is a real thing and Suh IMO has always been more about himself than than the team.

Suh's talent makes him worth the risk in most cases, but all things considered I would take McCoy over him 100 times out of 100
