Cam Newton vs Matt Ryan!

A Panther fans, we should all be behind our QB . . . but I hope he never does anything like that ever again.  Both blocks squarely on his throwing shoulder.

I'd rather see us lose 10 yards on a play than lose our franchise for the rest of the year.

Our QB is the top rusher, Panthers design plays for him 3rd and 1 or at the goal line. For 8 years the Panthers have relied on that and not put any resources in finding an alternative. He is the Panthers tough yardage battering ram, and you guys are worried about a couple blocks?

The FO and coaches have taken advantage of his size and toughness but injuries catch up for all men, big and small.

I would question the use of Cam by the FO before questioning Cam’s thinking on a couple blocks.

I love Cam, but honestly, sometimes a "business decision" would be better for his team (and career).

Perhaps some one-on-one time with the o-line coach to ingrain the "block with your left shoulder or don't block at all" into his real-time business-rule calculator.

Better decision making eliminates most of "the rest".  No matter the business, goals and expectations rise annually.  Whether a salesman, a mechanic, or a QB...the employee should improve and become more effective each year on the job.

Athletics aren't the same as a salesman or mechanic and trying to fit the same constrictions on both aren't realistic. Sure improving and being effective are important to any situation. But no, better decision-making doesn't eliminate the rest. For example if you throw a beautiful pass right where it needs to be but your receiver falls down after the ball is in the air and it gets intercepted it goes against the quarterback regardless of who made the mistake. There is no receiver stat for how many times he fell down, ran the wrong route etc. Football is a team sport and success is based on collectively winning not putting up individual stats. If we go to the Superbowl and win,  it doesn't matter if Cam won it for us or someone else did, he will be a Superbowl winning quarterback. If we lose and don't make the playoffs this year or next, he could be gone regardless of his stats. The goals don't go up every year for Cam, there is one goal- win the Superbowl. Everything else pales in comparison

Disagree.  Cognitive reflection and decision making are integral to job performance for all employees regardless of their role in the organization.

You think that football players don't reflect (watch film) and use decision-making (game planning) in preparation for each game?  Your tweet length response is incomplete and simplistic. Playing football involves so many other aspects like competitive fire, physical aggression and instincts. Players matching up physically in one on one battles that have to be choregraphed with 10 other guys to accomplish the goal.on each and every play. Of course you need cognition, introspection and decision-making in playing football. But when Cam blocks a defender to spring a play he is showing his teammates that he is just like them and doesn't expect them to do something he won't do. He is manning up and trying to.level something. In the moment trying to spring a big play. It is about doing the extra to win. Leaving it all on the field. Battling and dominating your opponent.

When warriors battle you worry about the injuries after the fact not before them. When he starts worrying and trying to avoid injury it almost guarantees it will happen. You can't play scared and still be effective. Cam thinking gee maybe I shouldn't run while reflecting in the film room doesn't carry much weight when the adrenaline gets pumping.

Would be nice if someone could find something with Brees trying to block... about 99% sure he’s never tried

Couldn't find a clip of just the play, but click this link right here and the video and will start at the play...

This was about 8 months and change after Brees had surgery to repair his torn labrum. He's had a few more since then, but this one is the one that always stands out in my memory.

    • Glass houses and all. I find the people who are the most adamant about this type of thing tend to have the most to hide. Careful buddy.
    • Also, wanted to point out, all 3 of the Pivot guys I respect and appreciate tremendously.  I know RC only had 1 pro bowl, but I loved his game.  He was tough as nails and played with a ton of heart and grit.  He was trying to knock people out, but was also super cerebral.  Fred is obviously a hall of famer and just as tough. Channing made the most of what he had and was hard-nosed as well.  And yet, all three of them let Steve slide on a ton of poo in this interview.  They actually cowered in several moments and I don’t like that at all.  Because for all the things I mentioned in my initial post in this thread, them not trying to reel him back in or hold his feet to the fire on certain bullshit, and feels gross.  Yall were all on the same competitive level as athletes, and yet, yall just let him skate on poo like talking about invoking using a gun on someone, laughing off how he essentially ended two teammates’ careers by BULLYING them and then co-signing it, and letting him completely sidestep accountability about his affair.  I get it, because apparently he invited you to his home to do the interview, but either talk some real poo or don’t do the interview at all.  This was some real softball poo.
    • This season’s leader, Daniel Jones, is averaging 265.9 yards per game, that would rank 12th in 2015. Even going back to 2020, he would rank 10th in passing yards. So it does appear that passing yards is down, but is that because they aren’t as good? Possibly, but we were spoilt in recent years when we had Brady, Peyton, Brees, Rodgers, Roethlisberger, Rivers, Ryan, Stafford (etc). As crops of QBs go, it was an amazing era to watch and most will end up in the Hall of Fame. I’m not convinced you we could list as many potential Hall of Fame QBs from the current crop. Will it go pass heavy again? I think there’s a good chance that it will, but it will require QBs that can consistently air the ball out in the frequency we saw in the 00s and 10s. I think currently coaches are favouring a more balanced approach, if not favouring a strong running game.
