The Offensive Line

Brain Burns has been solid, but I have to wonder if the team is second guessing not drafting Andre Dillard who was still on the board and the undisputed best LT this draft in pass protection?  Rolling the dice with Daryl Williams coming off season ending knee surgery and moving a career RT to Cam's blind side was either a super-ballsy or completely idiotic move.  It's till early, but indicator arrow is starting to point to the later.  Hopefully Daryl can keep Cam upright.

A team head-coached by Ron Rivera and GM’ed by Hurn-Dawg Hurney doesn’t lose a wink of sleep sacrificing protection for Cam Newton on the altar of Rivera’s Holy and Blessed Defense.

Someone else said it, BB and the Patriots gave the rest of the league the game plan to beat the Panthers. Blitz. A lot. The Oline can't handle the pressure, force Cam to run for his life. Bingo. Get yourself a W.

Blitzing the QB primarily through overloading the middle isn't exactly some revolutionary football concept only Bill Belichick could conjure up.

Besides, there's one crucial ingredient to all that, it's called talent.

Not to mention there's a slight difference in how opposing teams approach these methods in the regular season versus preseason. You know, like gameplanning?

How many huddlers watched other teams during Cam years??? There are plenty of teams that would trade OLs with Carolina. During those years they normally finished no worst than 16th overall.

Panthers had 1st/2nd team all-pro Norwell, Kalil and Turner for a three year run. Gross, Moton, Oher, and Williams where/are good OTs.

The OL problem is a league-wide problem. College and limited Practice time have made good OLmen ultra-rare.

Cam could also help the OL by not holding the dam ball for 5 seconds too.

We desperately needed to upgrade our pass rush. I would've honestly just moved Moton to LT full time and drafted Cody Ford in the 2nd to play RT.

The line  will be fine--but the biggest regret is going to be the failure to upgrade LG--the easiest position on the field to find talent, and we got Van Rotened again.

Pardis is learning the system---he calls the blocking assignments and there is communication between all OL whose feet start each play a few inches apart---so we have a new LT, a raw LG, and a new C.  They are developing on a schedule to be ready in September, not August.  Give them time to gel--they will not be great, but if we can get to average for the left side, I take that all day.

Granted the pass rush was non-existent last year and needed to be upgraded. However, the coaching staff was full go on the switch to the 3-4 prior to the draft and knew they were going to need to sign some FAs that were familiar with this system, so an EDGE guy wasn't a must in round one.  Believe me, I wanted an EDGE guy too, but it was a deep draft for them and didn't deem it absolutely necessary to get one in the first round.

I would have done the same thing, but knew they would not.  I said it all last year while being attacked by crackheads and basement dwellers about it.  Moton stays on the right side--mute point--unless there is a complete implosion on the left side--something that could happen.

Remember Williams is on a one-year deal.  I think their idea was to completely solidify the right side of the line and hope for the best on the left side...planning get the franchise  LT next year.

On paper I thought this would be one of the better O-lines we've had... Not sure why things are looking as grim as they are.... Wasn't Paradis considered one of the top centre's in the league!? He's looked like the wrong Kalil brother out there so far.. I hope we shuffle things around and get a serviceable line as the team can go super far with even above-average line play.

I just don’t understand where people see that this line is top third. Maybe top turd. Look the starters are ok, not great but ok. I saw very little protection calls which tells me the C needs work or we wanted to take the pressure to see how other players were reacting. It will limit our offense if we have to run 13, 22, 23 personnel. It is the depth that really scares me and the basis of my complaints the other night. I’m ok with the oline looking pedestrian again their 1s and 2s, but my god our 2s and 3s were really bad and if your fighting for a job, you do not want to see the tape. You don’t have an off game, when your fighting for the 53 and your playing the world champs in a dress rehearsal game. Not sure if I watched a different game than everyone else, maybe so.

    • Cooter, Kurb, others have passed on to glory….  Praise be.
    • Oh good for them! Hope this is the start of a long happy time in their lives here.
    • There was no reason to believe in either Cam or Jake as a top tier elite QB before those seasons either. Cam was an "athletic" QB in most people's minds and his passing skills were open for debate. And there was a bit to that as he was still trying to get that massive power in his arm tamed to be able to put some touch on his passes. And then, he did it. Missiles became bombs, the firing lanes became points of finesse. Cam grew up and leveled up, while still retaining the ability and drive to truck people whenever he wanted. And Jake... no one freaking believed in Jake except Jake himself. He got, and let's be honest with this, one chance in a losing game to make something out of his career. And he rose to the occasion like some kind of mythical hero and continued to do so for the season. He became a true leader for the team, and his gunslinger capabilities rehabbed Moose's career and created Smitty as a force in the league. Smitty went from a barker to a biter. But no one believed in Jake going in. And they trashed him on his way out. Now Bryce... who knows? I've seen some improvement. Maybe he finds his footing. His teammates seem to love and respect him and that means a lot. The game should be moving at his speed now. He has weapons available to him and maybe a defense that doesn't just roll over by the third quarter. And his coach seems to be moving this team in the right direction. Could he do it? It's up to him, if he can find the magic like Jake and Cam did. But don't doubt this, magic is really, really hard to find.
