...in the Tepper household: Panthers owner continues moving away from hedge fund business

Quote

Going forward the billionaire will manage money for just 15 special clients and all other investors will receive their money back, according to a Bloomberg News report.

The move, planned for some time, opens up the idea of Tepper taking on a much broader, front-facing role with the Panthers organization, the front office, player personnel and possibly even the economic development within the city of Charlotte and the Carolinas.

According to the Charlotte Business Journal, Tepper will be in London this week pitching to London business executives about investment opportunities in the Queen City. The Panthers take on Tampa Bay on Sunday on Fox 46 Charlotte - WJZY with coverage beginning at 5 a.m.

...and the Panthers new practice home: Panthers moving forward on Rock Hill training center

Grading has yet to begin at a secluded wooded area that the Carolina Panthers will someday call home.

A lot is happening behind the scenes, however, to push the massive development project forward.

Days ago, hundreds of neighbors in the Hutchison Place community got a letter from the family that owns the land, which is also the land they bought a piece of to build their homes.

The letter is an invitation to a community meeting on Oct. 17.

The invitation details plans for development on 234 acres,  including a practice facility, offices,  sports and entertainment venues, hospitality, recreation and retail.

The letter calls the project “truly transformative."

"That land's laid there since God made heaven and earth -- nothing's ever been done with it and all of a sudden, they're gonna put it in the city limits. Politics -- ain't it great?" Lanning said.

Some businesses near the site are welcoming the Panthers.

A manager at a shop on Mount Gallant Road said the team has offered to buy the land where his fiberglass business is located outside of Manchester Village.

City planners told Channel 9 Wednesday there are no plans to annex the Hutchison Place neighborhood into the city.

The entire community is on well water and septic tank systems, and they don't receive city services.

Panthers owner David Tepper has been spotted touring the area on a golf cart, and the team has said publicly they want to break ground at the site by April.

Rezoning, annexation and land development agreements need to be approved to get to that point.

There are also some local tax incentives still on the table that York County leaders haven't taken a vote on yet, but that's expected soon, too.

Leaders in Rock Hill expect the Panthers will wait to sign on the dotted line until the needed changes are made.

As far as the plans for the city, the rezoning issue will go before the Rock Hill Planning Commission on Nov. 9.

The first City Council vote could be on Nov. 25.

If all goes as planned, the vote could have a final vote on Dec. 9.

If there's on thing I am certain of....

....it's that whatever the Charlotte Business Journal is reporting should be viewed with a healthy dose of skepticism.

Erik Spanberg, who does most of the Panthers & Bobnets related reporting, is one of the most uninformed journalists I have ever seen.

During the sale of the Panthers he was wrong on just about everything as it related to the contenders and who had the best chance to take over the team.  Epically bad journalism it was!

    • I live in Indiana and took a trip that weekend to watch my two friend's teams play (Chiefs and Vikings) IN Minnesota when they were playing at a college field, I think TCF? Anyways, our plan was to watch the game (noon game) then do some shopping at the Mall of America, I wasn't planning on watching the Panthers play Seattle since I was out sight seeing and walking around after the noon game had ended. By the time we were walking back into the Mall the Panthers were down by 2 scores in the 4th or going into the 4th and we were all thirsty from walking around for 2.5 hours after the Vikings game so we decided to postpone shopping until after we ate. We found this nice little sports bar inside the mall that had the game on. Man, I'm so glad we skipped shopping because that was probably the most excited I've been in some time for a win. Beating Seattle in 2015 felt like the "monkey off the back" sort of feeling and I knew we had finally arrived as a team. The entire bar erupted when Cam hit Olsen for that walk off TD. Literally one of the greatest moments of my life. My friend wasn't so happy though lol, by the time the Panthers game ended ALL of the stores inside the mall had closed and he wasn't able to get any souvenirs. It was his first time watching a Vikings game live and making a trip like that so he was legit upset lol. I on the other hand couldn't have been happier.
    • This is the Buc's division to lose.  We come out on top only if the wheels come off if Tampa.  I agree we can be--and should be--better than the Saints and likely the Falcons.  A 9-8 season would be nice, but it isn't great.  It's mediocre and that something the Panthers haven't been in nearly a decade, but would be reason to celebrate.  Heck, the Steelers will likely fire Tomlin over a 9-8 season because they are tired of being mediocre.
    • First game was a awful stat line. 2nd DNP due to ankle Summer league doesn't help what hes bring, its dang near YMCA pickup game level.  I heavily question the type of player he is and his future was NOT, not not not what you use #4 pick on. Hornets got him on visit and still made the pick, they better hope he has some Larry legend in him. I maintain huge questions.
