Panthers.com: Update on Cam Newton

Quote

“I spent a long time speaking with Cam this week and he’s done everything he possibly can in his rehab process to get his foot to 100 percent,” general manager Marty Hurney said. “Unfortunately, we haven’t reached that point. The next step is for him to go see Dr. Anderson and gather more information.”

The Athletic: Why Cam Newton is seeking a third opinion by Jourdan Rodrigue (subscription required)

Quote

Newton’s visit to Anderson, a source told The Athletic, means that Newton is seeking a third opinion on his foot. He is working with the Panthers’ medical staff and his own team of physicians in Atlanta, but has become frustrated with the fickle nature of the injury and anxious about how slow it has taken to heal.

The source said Newton felt comfortable with Anderson, whom he has worked with in the past, and that familiarity was important as he seeks more information about his injury.

Charlotte Observer: Newton meeting with specialist will “really impact” his future with the Panthers by Brendan Marks

Quote

“He’s going up and probably seeing one of the best foot doctors, and whatever we get from the doctor, I think will probably really impact the decisions going forward,” Rivera said. “But until then, like I said, it would be pure speculation.”

Rivera also said he “didn’t want to get into” whether the team would consider placing Newton on season-ending injured reserve (IR).

CBS Sports: Cam Newton's continued absence a cautionary tale for optimistic timetables on foot injuries by Jonathan Jones

Quote

It's not so much that Cam Newton suffered a setback in his recovery for a mid-foot sprain so much as there hasn't been any significant recovery at all. From finally getting on the field in pregame warmups Sunday to visiting another doctor's office by Friday, the lack of improvement is what's most frustrating and concerning for the former NFL MVP and his 4-3 Carolina Panthers team.

One other thing which may not necessarily mean anything, but I've made a mental note of...

Top team sources Bill Voth and Max Henson haven't said jack about this. Even the article on Panthers.com doesn't list an author.

The only primary team source that I've so far seen even acknowledge that this story exists is Caroline Cann.

Make of that what you will.

(perhaps a hat, or a brooch, maybe even a pterodactyl...)

Reading them all together, the most common thread seems to be that they're doing everything imaginable to try to avoid surgery.

Unfortunately, it might not be working.

In that regard, I would hope that Cam's experience with his shoulder would influence how he approaches surgery. I know in general, athletes do not want to go under the knife, but this is the second injury that has (seemingly) failed to respond to a conservative rest and rehab plan.

All three are puppets.....that said, Cann seems to be semi-legit.

Did you see Rosinski's comment?

There-in lay a rub....

When this happened a lot of former players were saying this injury ended their careers or the careers of others they knew.  This is shaping up to be a lot more serious than the team wanted to initially acknowledge.

This team can’t go through another off season with Cam going through rehab and getting limited reps.

why am i not surprised at this.  100% recovery rate from this injury is over the 90% percentile within 15 months.   he did this with his shoulder too.

Once again Cam is trying to avoid surgery that will probably have to happen. I think father time might just be catching up.

There's no evidence to suggest this is the case -- if anything it would be the opposite.

    • D Carr must have really disliked the saints to wait and do this announcement after the draft has passed if he made this call a few weeks before the draft sure they would have approached it and the offseason differently.  oh well will be interesting to see how their qbs perform.  would love to see them roll with Thill and just make the whole offense towards his skillset.  Although sadly would be only playing in about half the games with how often he gets injured.
    • I have to say it's quite fascinating seeing you pivot from months and months of wailing and agonizing about threads derailing into Bryce Young slingfests only for you to turn around and do the same thing. And just for the record. Nobody in life ever attained wisdom and clarity from mistakes by having people blindly fawn over them and tell them they are above reproach and incapable of making mistakes. Our front office is just as human as we are. And based on the fact that front offices across the league outside of a handful of teams change on a fairly regular basis it's safe to say they are certainly no more infallible than the average Joe even though they possess significantly more knowledge usually. If you want a utopia where all you do is shine shoes for anyone associated with the Panthers you go right on ahead and create yourself a new community sir. More power to you.
    • I trust Morgan when it comes to LBs so I think Wallace will do well.
