3-4 def vs 4-3

It seems we’re much better at pass defense with the new 3-4 look, but very porous agains the run.   We were generally much better against the run but poor against the pass with the 4-3.

Didn’t Ron say we would toggle between them based on opponent and situation. If so, why didn’t we do it against the 49ers?

This. There was a great breakdown on Twitter (sorry don’t recall who posted it) saying that an offense isn’t more successful/worse against coverages or schemes, it’s all about personnel and matchups.

If we can’t be great at both I’d much rather be great at stopping the pass than the run in today’s NFL. But yeah the run D has been suspect in the 3-4. Personnel is definitely a factor, but from my eye test when we’ve been in 4-3 packages this season with the same personnel our run D has been better than when we’re in the 3-4. Against the Niners especially, it was all gap control and missed assignments, not really our players being small and bullied. It’s something that theoretically can be fixed, but it’s been a constant all year so Ron’s running out of time to figure it out.

This. We really don't have any prototype 3-4 DEs and only two prototype 4-3 DEs, both of whom are previous UDFAs. We have a bunch of 3-4 OLB types. We traded size/strength for speed on the edges.

Honestly, given this is our first year in the new system, it hasn't been a complete disaster outside the SF game.  We have to expect this until we have time to really draft / recruit a good 3-4 roster.  We're "ok" right now, but if we continue to build the roster for a 3-4, we'll be a lot better in a couple years.

    • Taking only players from the sheet that are realistically available in or after the listed round, I’d like… 1st: DT Caleb Banks (Styles not realistic) 2nd: LB Jacob Rodriguez 3rd: OT Best available from Bowry, Barber, and Casey 4th: CB Daylen Everette 5th: S Jalen Huskey 6th: RB Adam Randall 7th: IOL Best available from Lemieux, Dawkins, Leausa, and Brose   I know nothing about some of the players listed, but it seems like that would be the best way it could fall for now. I’m sure the list of who we meet will change a ton, and there will also be players we don’t meet with to keep quiet. I’d love to pick up Randall in the late rounds.
    • Not what I said. They know within the building why we aren't utilizing TEs more. If the rumors were true that we were seriously pursuing a couple of decent receiving TEs that strongly points toward a lack of quality receiving TEs currently on the roster. Does that mean we consider drafting one at 19? I don't know, but it wouldn't shock me and if we did there's only one guy it would be. I wouldn't be surprised at all to see TE drafting somewhere in the first three rounds.
    • Yeah, I don’t know. Tepper was behind the Bryce selection. Behind firings and hiring over his lack of development.  He doesn’t have to literally tell them their hands are tied for them to know this. It is in the air constantly. The Canales Bryce play calling was even portrayed by more than one person as Canales failing Bryce, instead of Bryce being responsible for his own performance (except when he does well, then it is all him). Now they have an extra coach in, to help the new OC get results from this QB.  The atmosphere is not welcoming to prototypical young QBs that have talent. You get Jake Plummer types or old vets. I think we are stuck.
