Defensive scheme change

What in the world is going on there?

A couple of people have pointed out that we spent the offseason loading up on players that fit one scheme (and even having some existing players adjust) but we're now spending most of our time running another.

Heck, the scheme switch was considered to be one of the reasons why we were letting Thomas Davis go. The drafting of Brian Burns and Christian Miller was said to align with that as well.

Theories as to what happened?

1.  We went from a great tandem in the middle of Star/KK.  Result? Great run defense.

2.  We lost Star last year.  Result? Run D started getting bad.

3.  We lost KK this year to injury? Result? We are now horrific.

Straight up talent issue in the middle IMO.

and as a byproduct, getting weaker in the middle impacts Luke.

It’s not Luke. It’s the damn fat expensive DLs that we are paying them to hold their grounds and free Luke to roam around the middle making tackles that cannot do that. Quit pointing the fingers at Luke.

Luke's been roaming around quite well, and missing tackles and assignments while doing so.

We got McCoy, though. And supposedly this scheme was going to fit Dontari Poe better.

And let's be real. Short wasn't playing that well even before he got injured.

(I will concede that Poe has been largely a bust)

He doesn't know what he's doing. He'll try something new, hit a rough spot, panic and revert to old more familiar but ineffective ways for the sake of that blessed continuity.

He wants to be more than what he is, he knows he needs to be more, but he's scared/lacks confidence and/or just not smart enough. He can't adapt.

So tired of his tenure.

McCoy isn't Star.  And KK and Star were an elite tandem that complimented each other and allowed Luke to thrive.   Because Both KK and Star required their own game planning by an offense.

The DL in front of Luke allows offenses to beat the DL and get their hands on Luke.  That simply prevents Luke front getting ahead of plays like he traditionally has.   This all started last year.

Rivera came in with a half baked idea and see's this "scheme change" getting ass whipped every week. Besides negating Luke's ability to make plays, it's also turned the defense line into swiss cheese.

Now midway through the season, he doesn't have the big bodies to have a viable run defense....and he's fugged.

I get the talent thing (Ray Lewis had a similar problem for a couple of years) but that's not necessarily what I'm talking about.

It isn't strictly a question of why we're bad. It's why did we scheme and retool to zig and then go into games and zag.

What gets me is every time we actually use the 3-4 both poe and Butler show up in the backfield. I really just think Rivera doesn't know what he's doing. Lack of having a base may be actually causing us to perform poorly in the run because of hesitation.

Imagine changing your scheme to where it doesn't benefit your generational hall of fame MLB. Imagine having a scheme that doesn't benefit your generational hall of fame QB. Imagine having converted d-linemen to protect your franchise QB. I loathe Rivera so damn much. The amount of talent he has wasted over the years is a travesty. I don't think you guys know just how hard it is to get not one, but TWO generational hall of fame players play on the same team.
