Nick Wright: If Panthers move on from Cam, they’ll be drafting a QB in first round of 2021 draft

That's the sad part there. Good thing KA seems to be the future.

absolutely nobody - save maybe you - think KA "seems" to be the future.  He will certainly be on the roster next year and has shown me enough to think he could grow into a starter in the league... He has several weeks to audition to be someone we consider building around, but if the season ended today we would be bringing in Mariota, Bridgewater, or some other vet to compete/be the starter.

Tepper won't get rid of a Cam Newton that can be healthy again.

Unfortunately, from what I understand they don't believe he can be healthy for any significant amount of time.

I completely agree!  Interesting to see what happens.  We will find out in the upcoming months.

I think Cam can be healthy again. I hope Cam can be healthy again. I definitely don't want to see a healthy Cam Newton as a star elsewhere because I will have very, very, very, very, very hard feelings towards ownership about that.

Perhaps he can.

How many million of your own dollars would you be willing to gamble on that?

His shoulder gave out last year and didn't exactly look great this year.

His shoulder looked good in the preseason.  He started struggling in the regular season throwing when he couldn't plant his foot.

As an 11 billionaire? $19 million for sure.

By all accounts, the actual 11 billionaire disagrees.

Beyond that though, you also have to have Newton's willingness to play out the final year of his deal with no guarantees. General consensus is that's not happening either.

And again, if you were in his position, would you?

But you didn't ask him, you asked me.

If I were Cam, I'd consider it among all the available options. I wouldn't nix it over some sense of wounded pride.

It's not just pride though.

You're asking a quarterback who'll be 31 at the start of the year and who's looking for the security of his last contract to go into a situation knowing that his health has been iffy without any guarantees.

It's not hard to understand why anybody in his position would decline that.

That's not pride. That's self protection.

This narrative needs to die.  His arm hasn't been the "same" in a VERY long time.

Can he hit the occasional deep ball to Curtis in July with no wear and tear on his arm?  Sure.  Can he do it 11 game into the season, after practicing fully every week, and after the cumulative effects of having him knocked around for 10 games and throwing 30+ times?

That's the question.  You simply cannot pay a QB with Cam's (what used to be) skillset, just can't, until you can assure that he is 100% healthy moving forward, and can show that he can maintain that health.

    • I mean, I hear what y'all are saying, but Derrick could have been positive without being negative.  He essentially accused people of not seeing Bryce's improvement because of their desire to not be wrong. He could've kept it about Bryce and the team. For example, he could've said: "Bryce has made strides, and we believe in him. This coming season, his continued improvement will turn a lot of people into believers."  That would've been supportive of his teammate and sent a message to the doubters. That being said, his tact almost summoned and left the door ajar for more skepticism. That's my take anyway. Bryce has improved from the bottom to perhaps skirting the line between the bottom third and mid-third at best...after three seasons. We've all seen it. Yay! In my mind, Bryce has still got a long way to go and a short time to get there, but my expectations are top five--at least top 10--always! Yes, I am a fan, so there's that, but I don't believe it's unreasonable to expect excellence. Hopefully the Panthers FO has the same mindset (and that doesn't even necessarily have anything to do with what we gave up to acquire him). That is the lens I'm looking through. Derrick Brown has his homer glasses on. He just needs to be more diplomatic and thoughtful with his words in my opinion, but I get it that he's a good teammate.
    • I have no doubt the Canes will come out like gangbusters, huge bounce back from game one - my only concern is Freddie, if he lets in a couple of softies and Dobes stays hot we could be in trouble.
