Nick Wright: If Panthers move on from Cam, they’ll be drafting a QB in first round of 2021 draft

I think Cam can be healthy again. I hope Cam can be healthy again. I definitely don't want to see a healthy Cam Newton as a star elsewhere because I will have very, very, very, very, very hard feelings towards ownership about that.

Agreed and this is why I am willing to "throw" away a season next year to see if Cam is and can be healthy again.  If not, I can accept next season being like this one and move on from there.  For me that is worth it to see.

Here's the thing about "throwing away a season" for any reason though...

For some veteran players, that's probably going to be their last season.

For other guys, it's going to be a contract year when they're looking for their next paycheck.

For some young players, it might be their only chance to make an impression.

If you make it all about one guy, even if that guy is a quarterback, you're risking screwing over several other players on your team in favor of gambling on that one player.

Is that a fair thing to ask?

Wright has an agenda fwiw, and given it, i'm not surprised with this take.  I won't elaborate because I don't want to cause a fight but Wright dismissing essentially a rookie Allen like this is the least surprising thing ever and just look at what he was saying about Daniel Jones last April for an explanation why.

Cam was expected to silence his critics doubts this year by demonstrating the ability to make the deep throws and have his arm last an entire season.

It didn't work out that way, so now Cam and the Panthers are facing the worst case scenario of a having a franchise QB that is near the end of his contract without the needed evidence to show he is worth retaining.

If Cam agreed, the Panthers could retain his services for 2020, making next season a show me year.

Without that, signing Cam to a long term contract in the 30 mil/year range is problematic.

Would you agree to that if you were in his position?

Y’all say cam still got 5 more years then turn around and say he has no trade value...

The guy who was quoted in the OP thinks he has five more years.

I'm not so sure you could find that many people on here that would agree to that.

He’ll be solid. The INTs mainly came in the first 3 weeks. He’s had 3 in the last 7 games. He’s also still learning and young. He had so much success as a true freshman that people kept making the mistake of putting him into the 2020 draft. He’s got the rest of this year and a whole junior year to keep getting more experience but he’s going to be pretty close to a sure thing.

We won’t have a shot at Lawrence, although man if we do this place is going to be a poo show next year going 2-14.

If we trade Cam, then I’d be shocked if we don’t go QB this year. I think the middle 1st will still have solid prospects like Watson/Mahomes or long ago like Roethlisberger. I’m not sure 2021 is as good besides Lawrence.

The only reason we don’t go QB in the 1st without Cam is if Allen somehow blossoms over a playoff chase.

Here's an intriguing question...

If you were to trade high enough to get one of the top quarterbacks  you might also conceivably be high enough to get Chase Young.

What do you do?

Is there a risk involved?  Absolutely.

However, if Cam is wanting to be paid like a top tier QB he is likely going to have to demonstrate he still has the physical ability to play like one.

The best chance he has to do that is as the Panthers QB in 2020.

Otherwise his market value with other teams will be limited, since any team signing Cam will be doing so on faith.

    • Taking only players from the sheet that are realistically available in or after the listed round, I’d like… 1st: DT Caleb Banks (Styles not realistic) 2nd: LB Jacob Rodriguez 3rd: OT Best available from Bowry, Barber, and Casey 4th: CB Daylen Everette 5th: S Jalen Huskey 6th: RB Adam Randall 7th: IOL Best available from Lemieux, Dawkins, Leausa, and Brose   I know nothing about some of the players listed, but it seems like that would be the best way it could fall for now. I’m sure the list of who we meet will change a ton, and there will also be players we don’t meet with to keep quiet. I’d love to pick up Randall in the late rounds.
    • Not what I said. They know within the building why we aren't utilizing TEs more. If the rumors were true that we were seriously pursuing a couple of decent receiving TEs that strongly points toward a lack of quality receiving TEs currently on the roster. Does that mean we consider drafting one at 19? I don't know, but it wouldn't shock me and if we did there's only one guy it would be. I wouldn't be surprised at all to see TE drafting somewhere in the first three rounds.
    • Yeah, I don’t know. Tepper was behind the Bryce selection. Behind firings and hiring over his lack of development.  He doesn’t have to literally tell them their hands are tied for them to know this. It is in the air constantly. The Canales Bryce play calling was even portrayed by more than one person as Canales failing Bryce, instead of Bryce being responsible for his own performance (except when he does well, then it is all him). Now they have an extra coach in, to help the new OC get results from this QB.  The atmosphere is not welcoming to prototypical young QBs that have talent. You get Jake Plummer types or old vets. I think we are stuck.
