I would fire Hurney just for this

So he’s 86%?  That’s not far off from Gano’s  average in Carolina (85.7).

After he won the kicking competition he (Gano) is over 93%. Nobody was complaining until he was injured. Injury to a kicker is not something a GM thinks about. But Butker is at 90% for his career.

The only flaw I see in that line of thinking is I believe Rivera and probably the special teams staff had a large influence on which kicker we kept.

Hurney does not strike me as the type to make full blown decisions like that without input from his Head Coach. Could he have over ruled Rivera? Yes I assume so. In this case should he have? Yes he should have.

To me this is why Ron was never able to take teams to the playoffs except under Gettleman.  Hurney seems much more of a “give the coach with what he asks for” personality whereas the Gettleman/Rivera tandem probably had many more spirited discussions regarding personnel decisions.

Remember when we traded a 4th round pick for a punter that played 1-2 seasons with us.....

yet no one came out and said this is a fireable move, poo happens, quit harping on a situation that didn’t cost us drastically

Had Hurney did that.....

$13,000,000 difference, and counting, isn't a dramatic amount of money dedicated solely to the kicker in a hard salary cap sport?

And just because we can't have a single thread about Hurney without someone bringing up DG...you may want to use some context about "fireable offense", although context really isn't your thing.

The reason nobody brought up that move as a fireable offense is because we had just come off of a trip to the Super Bowl.  Whereas in this situation, we haven't had a winning season in 3 years, your head coach just got fired, and Gano is still costing this team money today, and will next year.

The Chiefs have solidified their lead in the AFC West over the last few weeks and kicker Harrison Butker has helped them do that.

Butker hit a game-winning field goal to knock off the Vikings in Week Nine and has made 10-of-11 field goals and 12-of-13 extra points since the start of November. He’s made all five of the field goals he’s tried from at least 40 yards and posted the second most points in the league over that period despite only playing four games over the last five weeks.

The NFL announced on Thursday that Butker has been named the AFC’s special teams player of the month. He was named the conference’s special teams player of the week after the Vikings game.

Butker is 25-of-29 on field goals and 37-of-39 on extra points over the course of the entire season. He’ll be in New England with the rest of the Chiefs on Sunday.

He’s only drafted like 3-4 HoF players for Carolina, so let’s fire him because he let a kicker walk.

for the record if Gano comes back fully healthy from his injury we are fine with him. Gano and Butkers numbers were very comparable before Gano injured his leg last year. It’s not the end of the world.

my bigger questions is about a medical staff that allowed Gano to continue to kick and not get surgery until recently for a break that happened last year. That’s the real question about our kicker not this one.

This is what's frustrating about people holding this move up.

In a vacuum, no it's not the end of the world.  13M is a lot, but not going to destroy your cap situation.

However, it's the accumulation of all of Hurney's moves that hurt the cap that makes this one frustrating.  Marty Hurney simply cannot manage the cap at all, he has no forethought about the team moving forward.

So, you get the Gano thing, incredibly stupid, short sighted, myopic, whatever you want to call it....but then you add that onto the Olsen extension, the Gano extension (the vitriol of some of this conversation is about not only keeping Gano, but then having to PAY him, whereas you had Butker cheap for 4 years), the restructuring of KK and Trai's deals, etc...

It's all of those moves, none of them smart football decisions that culminate in Marty being an awful manager of money/the cap...it's always been what he's worst at in his job.

The Olsen extension was 100% worth it. Olsen is still playing like an upper echelon TE.

Since signing that extension Greg has started 21 games for us, compiled 843 yards, and 6 TD's.

Total cost for that?  $18,270.000 when all is said and done.

He was such a great GM that multiple teams were clamoring for his services when he was fired.  smh
