The Shaq contract pretty much confirms Tepper is JR 2.0

Name one, just one team who has had success by deploying half measures.. You know what I’m talking about, the same crap we have been doing the last decade. HALF MEASURES. Keep the HC, fire the GM (Hurney) or fire the GM but keep the HC (Gettleman) HALF MEASURE. For the love of god can we just never have true fresh start. Why is it so hard to fire Hurney? Make no mistake, The new Shaq contract was Hurney way of saying he is safe and not going anywhere for the forseeable future. Why can’t we be the Bills? They brought in new HC/new GM at the same time and it’s worked wonders. But alas, we are the team of mediocrity and half measures.

I don't want to say it's so but it's looking that way. Keeping Hurney is like keep JR.

Half measures NEVER work in football nor in life for that matter. I’ve said this once and I’ll say it again, I do not care one bit Hurney can draft in the first round because he is so horrible in every other facet of the job that it far outweighs all the good he does in the first round anyway. So pretty much you keep a GM who will forever draft pro bowlers once a year but keep having losing records.

My question: Why are we working contracts without knowing what we'll be deploying in 2020?

Because it’s what incompetent owners and football teams do. I would not be the least bit surprised if Fewell is our new DC and Shula our new OC. Firing Rivera was just a publicity stunt, this team will look exactly the same next year as Tepper hires a yes man HC, mark my words

Maybe Hurney is staying until the Steelers gm’s contract is up after the draft. Maybe Shaq is a 25 year old LB who fits in both a 3-4 and 4-3 that never has to leave the field, and is someone we want to build around.

Shaq is a role player, a dispensable one, he’s not a CMC or Luke Kuechly that you sign long term to a big contract. Can be easily replaced in the off season by a cheap FA 0n a one year deal. Should have let him walk. He’s good but not that good, he’s more like a AJ Klein type player.. Good but easily replaceable

Some of y’all may want to get comfy with the probability that Luke ain’t gonna be here after two years. And Shaq is the future and whoever else we draft here in the next couple of years to replace Luke.

I don’t feel like this was just a straight up Hurney move. Tepper obviously signed off on it and you have to know they have started discussions about who the young core is going to be going forward.

    • I guess i have to add I am curious as well as to what Tepper has done that shows he has backed off.  Thats not a hard ask.  I guess I am in a holding pattern of what to believe until the wheels come off again.  Not saying thats going to happen but there is more data out there to suggest it will vs a turn around.
    • Never a fan of him for us but this is compete BS. Teddy seems like a good dude. https://www.espn.com/nfl/story/_/id/45740176/teddy-bridgewater-suspended-miami-northwestern-coaching-job
    • Running or being able to run the ball allows you to control the game. You control the pace, score, and time of possession. It does also allow your defense to rest and when they do get on the field, go 100%. That in turn forces the opponents offense not have 3 and outs. That's huge pressure, if the other team is just running the ball while having 14 plays drives.  If you are able to get 3.5 yards a carry and mix in smoke routes that gain similar while allowing the clock to run......you control the game.  Deal is nearly all rules changes in the 25 years have helped the passing part. Young folks and gambling folk want to see 37-45 scores. Those 10-16 score teams are poison and toxic, I don't care personally just win. I can enjoy a 6-3 slug-out just the same as 50-42.  There just too many factors to go over. Running used to be important for playoff ball, cause it was before half the league got domes. Running the ball in snow, cold, wet conditions was the path. Like NE played in that awful division each for 20 years during the Dynasty run, they normally had the #1 seed and home field. Thats why bill always had a #1 defense and enough offense to win. It was a huge advantage.    I have thought you need to pass in order to score, THEN you must be able to run the ball with 7minutes remaining to keep the other teams offense off the field. But if you're setup to pass and get no experience during the game to try rushing plays, who knows what you can do. So I feel you truly need a balanced attack, that's the key and main goal. Run for first downs went you need too and pass for TDs when you need too.
