Rhule: Giants or Stay Home

Per LaCanfora: It's Giants or Baylor for Rhule

Quote

There is a strong sense among various executives involved in ongoing NFL coaching searches that Matt Rhule is either the next coach of the Giants or staying at Baylor. The Panthers definitely want an audience with him if possible, and the Cowboys surely will too once they get around to letting go of Jason Garrett, but it just may be the Giants or nothing.

Rhule has extreme leverage, with the rest of the Giants candidates list not exactly full of sure things, and with another new extension from his school already in his back pocket as he catches rays in Mexico and plans his next move. The Giants job is, frankly, a shell of what it was once considered to be after ownership keeps churning through coaches and refusing to let go of coaches and struggling general managers at the same time and, basically, continuing to steal plays from Jimmy Haslam's hiring manual.

The Giants are desperate, whether they realize it or not, and Rhule is far and away their best play. I continue to hear it is a job that uniquely appeals to him and tugs at his heart strings, and he has by no means closed the door on the NFL. Heck, he went deep into talks with the lowly Jets just a year ago. It could certainly happen, and league sources maintain that despite GM Dave Gettleman still being in charge, for now, there is a real possibility his role evolves (read: lessens) between now and right after the draft should an A List candidate strongly suggest as much.

It's imperative that the Giants find someone who has actually done the job before -- and done it well -- whether in the pro or college ranks. They need to find their next Tom Coughlin, and doing it with an arranged marriage with a GM who doesn't exactly elicit oohs and aahs in the coaching community makes it all the more difficult. Yes, Rhule and Gettleman have worked together before, but his recent results have been poor. It's a dynamic worth monitoring as the chase for Rhule heats up next week.

Other news at the link:

- Mike Zimmer could be fired from the Vikings if they lose this weekend. Speculation is they could replace him with Gary Kubiak (already on staff) or the recently fired Pat Shurmur (did good as their OC before getting the Giants job). GM Rick Spielman could be out too.

- The Redskins might be a landing spot for Spielman if he's fired, but word is they'll be looking at Colts executive Morocco Brown for their open GM spot. Snyder feels that they might need someone who's a good talent evaluator to work with Rivera (imagine that)

- Lastly, despite recent statements, Urban Meyer is indeed in the mix in Cleveland. Jimmy and Dee Haslam are already quite familiar with - and comfortable with - Meyer so a long interview to get to know one another wouldn't really be necessary. If they listen to Paul DePodesta though, it could be Kevin Stefanski's turn to try and fix the Browns (good luck).

FYI: No real Panthers news in this artice unless you count that they probably don't have a realistic shot at Matt Rhule.

I'm not even sure why the Browns want Urban Meyer either since his strength has always been committing recruitment violations and then getting out of dodge before he can get in trouble for it.

It's the Haslams.

I wonder if McD would even want this job?  We may be putting our eggs in the wrong baskets.

Breer says he does. He reported a while back that McDaniels and the Panthers have been "on each other's radar" for the better part of the last two years.

And to be clear, he's not the only one saying this.

This is why I can never finish an article written by the talking heads.

Comparing coaching at the collegiate level to the professional ranks is nothing but ignorant and simpleton on its face. Fugging Nick Saban couldn't handle the professional coaching gig.

"... find someone who has done the job before ..." (the "job" the Giants are interviewing candidates is the head coaching job of an NFL team).

I think LaCanfora recognizes that between the whole "nah, I'm going to Mexico after the game" and other things, Rhule is coming off right now as a bit of a tool.

He's referred to the Panthers a couple of times as "hoping for an audience" with Rhule, as if he were royalty... or thinks he is.

    • He has a lot to work on for sure but he has been a huge boost to the offense. It's nice to finally have an elite WR.
    • We have been on that roller coaster ride already. He needs to have streaks far longer than a couple of good games.  People raved about the Green Bay game in 2023. Which was mostly a good 2nd half and hot 4th quarter.  Ask me what happened the next four games, if you don’t remember. or just go look them up. There isn’t much to see.  The end of last year had some good things and one excellent outing, and look up what followed that, which you won’t have to but he came out this year looking like week 1 2023.  Now he is on a game and a half streak, against a bad Miami team and lowest rated defense in the league - at home.  This is the reality in the big picture. He needs to break his pattern, in a positive way.
    • This "noodle arm" characterization just baffles me. There's way more involved in a successful downfield passing attack than simple air yards. Let's take two stat-lines for throws of 40+ air yards (no YAC) from the last 3 seasons: 5/29 (17%) for 3 TDs and 2 INTs 1/9 (11%) for 1 TD So with three times the number of attempts, you net +6% completion percentage, the same TD rate, and 2 arm punt INTs to boot. The first player is Mahomes, the second is Bryce. Clearly Bryce attempts these throws at a much lower rate, but his success rate is quite similar to one of the most talented downfield throwers of all time. The takeaway isn't that Bryce is Mahomes-lite (if he was his usage rate for these would be much higher) but that these throws by their very nature are extremely difficult, very scheme-specific, and even an elite thrower can have wildly differing success rates season by season. And before we get into the complaints of cherry-picking, this is far more substantial information than the various insinuations that Bryce struggles to even get the ball 20 yards downfield, much less 40+. And the wildest part of this is that every time Mahomes threw a bomb over the last 3 season, 83% of the time the end result was failure, yet many Chiefs fans complain that he isn't taking even more shots downfield.
