The first thing you need to realize about Marty Hurney is that he does the bidding of others.  He's an extreme collaborative guy.  He's not a "large and in charge" type of GM.

When Fox was here, JF gave him a shopping list, and that's what Marty bought.  Yes, he evaluates and has input, but in the end, he got the guys the coach wanted.  It was the same way with Rivera.  Marty got the guys Ron wanted.  It's the same reason we were in cap hell when he was fired, he signed the guys JR wanted to reward/keep at all costs.  The only exception to this was Fox's lame duck year where their relationship had deteriorated.

So, in this case, it won't be Marty's rebuild, it will be Rhule's.  If we happen to fill the Asst. GM/VP role before the draft (unlikely), then he would also have input this year.  In future years, it will likely be a combo of Rhule and the Asst. GM (probably GM after this draft) that will be the primary builders.  They should also have a new and improved scouting department to feed them talent.

Either way, I think Marty is just here now to advise with the process, not be in charge of it.  Once that's no longer needed, he'll either be gone or reassigned.

I actually do. He is they guy that brought up Cam & Luke. Biggest complaint from me about Hurney was his cap management. Not his personnel decisions

Phil Savage drafted Joe Thomas.

Drafting two or three great players doesn't mean anything if you build sh-tty teams around them.

I think a lot of our poo teams was more of a product of not having cap room to fill holes on both sides of the ball.

was it john fox’s idea to trade into the first to grab jimmy clausen even though no other executive was willing to touch the guy with a ten foot pole in the first round? i know it didn’t happen but marty was on the phone trying to cut a deal.

Jimmy Clausen = One of the Panthers all time bad decisions. I am no pro scout but i watched him at Wofford training camp and quickly realized  the Panthers had made a big mistake drafting the noodle armed Clausen. That was the year i lost all confidence in Mel Kippers draft reviews.

You can compensate for low cap space if you draft well.

Or you can draft Jimmy Clausen, Armanti Edwards, Joe Adams and Amini Silatolu.

First of all, that was the draft that took place after the fallout between Fox and the team as he led into his lame duck season.  So, he wasn't overly involved with the draft.

Also, it was one person who knew a scout at the time that said Marty was trying to trade up, but I've heard from others in the know that was not the case.  Other teams were calling to see if he was willing to trade up (he had a reputation for bad deals by that time).  Yes, there were discussions inside the room, but it was more of a "what do you think" discussion than a "I want this guy, lets do it" discussion where he had to be talked out of it.

Everyone has busts. Y'all act like being a good drafter means you bat 1000.  Armanti Edwards and Everett Brown stand out because we moved up to get them, and I understand that, but the main core of our 15-1 team was Hurney guys
