Carolina sticking with Cam

The quickest path back to relevance comes by rebuilding a defense. You're far more likely to luck into 20 points on offense with CMC and Moore than you are to luck into holding a team under 20 with Shaq and a bunch of delivery boys and door-to-door dictionary salesmen on defense.

Pick Brown No. 7. If he ain't there, pick Simmons. Go for Kyle Dugger if we can. Dude will be a beast. This offseason needs to be defense-first.

No kidding. Part of the reason why I want a full rebuild. I’d rather trade Cam and go for a craptastic 2020. People keep mentioning 2015 Cam, which would be nice and may not happen, but what if we put the 2015 offense with the 2019 defense? We are a 9-7 (Rams had same point differential) or 8-8 team. That doesn’t even take into account that the 2015 D was by far the best takeaway team and led the 2015 offense to more points. That’s how bad our 2019 D was that they’d make MVP Cam go 8-8 and we are about to lose Kuechly, Addison, McCoy, Butler, Bradberry, Irvin, Boston and Cockrell. Maybe Short and Poe as well. Some of them were part of the problem but if we are going to extend Cam we won’t have the financial flexibility or get high enough picks to turn the rebuild around.

The D needs a complete overhaul and is also why we extended Shaq and why we need CMC and Moore for the rebuild.

After reading this thread, I can tell you that many posters here don't understand the difference between someone saying what they think will happen, what they want to happen, and what they think the best direction is for the team moving forward.

I can give you my take on all three of those directions pretty easily.

What I think will happen: I don't know. At this point, the only thing I feel confident saying is that Newton won't get an extension this offseason. Gun to my head, I think he plays here in 2020 but I wouldn't be confident beyond that. I also wouldn't guarantee that he finishes the season healthy given that hasn't happened since 2017 (if then).

What I want to happen: I don't care. Whatever is best for the team, and there are waaayyy too many unknowns to say for certain what that is right now.

What I think is the best option: See answers #1 and 2.

You are being too emotional about all this.

I'm honestly not interested in the quickest path to relevance so much as I am the best path to excellence.

What that is? That's kind of the important question.

The one thing I feel most certain of is that it doesn't involve Marty Hurney.

This is what many of the posters here don't truly realize.  This team is god awful....terrible, from top to bottom.

I can say with certainty, that we have 1 position that is in good shape...1.  Running back.  How exciting.

We need help at every other position group, and have not even started cutting the dead weight around here yet.  We have need at OT, OG, C, TE, QB, and WR.

Also need help at S, CB, LB, DT, and DE.

We literally need help across the board, but people really believe that a "healthy" Cam Newton can take this team to the playoffs?  God I wish my glasses were that rose colored.

Not to mention we have about 47 minutes worth of NFL coaching experience within our coaching ranks, and still have Marty in the Kings Chair.

My biggest question through all of this is "why would Cam even want to play for this team moving forward?"  We have done a pretty piss poor job of surrounding him with talent over his career here, and now he is going to lead the worst roster we have had since 2010?  I just don't quite understand it....maybe he just really really loves Charlotte?

P.S. I also keep hearing about Cam having more weapons than he ever has...what if our RB or Moore went down with a season ending injury?  What now?

    • Cam was hitting his stride as a QB in 2017/2018.     This is why I think stats like completion percentage are overrated. As long as a QB is clutch and makes the throws to win the game the rest doesn’t really matter. What good is a check down stat padder if they’re a choker.  Until Norv Turner (and briefly Chud) got here we put Cam in high pressure throwing situations all the time. We also ran the ball on first down more than most teams in the NFL in the Ron era. Coupled with shitty WRs, all that is expressed in his stats. I also assume Cam took the ball in his hands on many occasions rather than trust Funchess to catch the ball.    It was also never Cams job to play the game like someone else. His presence on the field dictated the game in a way that is rarely seen.  He showed he could play the dink and dunk game just before TJ Watt. That didn’t suddenly make him better than his earlier seasons. He just got put in a legit under center  passing game again for first time since his rookie year with Chud.    Ron took the quickest path to success and abused the RPO because his ass was about to get fired.    Cam never got the credit for being the cerebral player that he was. I just think when you are legitimately a human Superman, sometimes the best play is having the ball in your hands. He was a better passer than Delhomme was.
    • I don't think Canales has any problem benching Bryce or moving on if Bryce doesn't come out playing like the end of last year.  It's year 3 no more excuses for Bryce
    • Yea Bryce was definitely a top half qb the second half of last season but I'm not sure Canales is 100% sold on him.  Like I've said in another post I think that's part of why we talked to so many South Carolina players in the draft process.  I think they are doing early due diligence on Sellers just in case.
