go look at our draft history during his tenure, where he drafted basically our entire core

if you want i'll list some for you

the verdict is still out on the 2018-19 classes (though dj moore is already really good so i included him)

(not listing 2001, since some disagree on if he was the main voice. only listing picks which would be considered "good", decent ones like getting depth later in the draft: mcclain in the 7th round, daley in the 6th and benwiekere in the 5th around etc. not included)
rd 1: julius peppers, jordan gross, chris gamble, thomas davis, deangelo williams, jon beason, stewart, cam newton, luke kuechly, dj moore,

rd 2: deshaun foster, ryan kalil, donte jackson, kawann short

rd 3: will witherspoon (good pick for round 3), travelle wharton, evan mathis (wasnt great here but still became a good player), james anderson, charles johnson,

rd 5: geoff handgartner, gary barnidge, josh norman

rd 6: greg hardy

rd 7: geoff scwartz and mackenzie barndeau (both were good depth lineman, starters in some cases), captain munnerlyn,

id be happy with keeping him around in an assistant role, he can definitely scout, and hurney  really isnt that bad outside of the first round as this board would like you to believe he is. he'd be a great scout and person to take advice from (as someone else pointed out in this thread), maybe not the best gm, but tepper is spot on with his comments of him being a good talent evaluator.

As a Louisville fan I will tell you Gary Barnidge was one of my favorite TEs of all time in college. He was so much fun to watch, and he did literally nothing but waste away in Carolina behind every single coach and coordinator here for YEARS.

Then suddenly the guy goes to the Browns, of all places, and is a Pro Bowler.

It is more than just drafting with Hurney, it's the fact that we mismanage the crap out of our personnel.

Hurney is that sales rep at your company that wins 1 big account per year then fugs up every other account he touches through shear incompetence losing the company more money than what they earned with the 1 account but still walks around like he's the alpha dog because he got "the big one".

Sounds about right.

Donte isn't good and Short was a Gettleman pick.

Also the vast majority of those picks outside of the 1st were guys taken pre 2009. Damn near everyone after that was garbage. I count 4 decent picks outside round 1 post 2009, and that's including Donte Jackson. So in 6 drafts (2009-2012, 2018, 2019), he took 4 people that weren't complete garbage outside round 1.

That's below average talent evaluation to me.

forgot about short being a gman pick, donte is fine and hasnt developed yet so jumping to a conclusion on him is premature. also yeah, there's a reason he was fired. he was just a horrible GM from 09 till being fired. also, 2018-2019 is again, too early to judge (though there are some that have already been total busts like gaulden, that was just bad). for instance, the verdict is still out on donte jackson, ian thomas, daley (who i'd say has been a solid pick so far), little, etc.

Compared to other GMs around the league Hurney is ranked near the bottom for rounds 2-7

For every good pick hes made hes got 2-3 bad ones to follow, and not only were they bad picks, he trades up overvaluing raw prospects that dont pan out so its twice as bad.
