Could signing Okung mean that both Daley and Moton are sliding inside?

Kind of what I was thinking all along.  Okung LT, Little LG, Paradis C, Daley RG,  Moton RT.  All that could change after the draft but I would be surprised if we drafted a tackle early, if at all.  G,C type pick seems much more possible.  Let Little learn what he can from Okung and hope he is ready for LT 2021.  Not saying that is what I would do but I think that is there thinking.

We needed tackle depth, now we have more.

If it doesn't work out we keep looking like we have been the better part of the last decade aside from that brief period of time where we had Oher in place before the injuries.

Why do that when we already have a perfectly capable RT in Moton available right now?

It just seems counterproductive and adding an extra step/variable into the O-line equation.

Moton is a known commodity at RT, and he's good at it. Why make RT weaker just to make RG just as strong as it was last year if it's easier to replace RG than RT?

Add into that, playing LT and RT are like shooting free throws or wiping your ass with the opposite hand. Sure you can kind of do it, but if you haven't been practicing then you'll be at a distinct disadvantage and look worse than you might actually be due to inexperience.

It just doesn't make sense to me.

Remember last year when some posters were INSISTING that Moton was going to be moved to LG?

Good times.

I hope we move Little inside to OG. I'm not sold on it working out, but moving him inside could allow Hurney to save face on that trade up and keep OT on the board at #7. This is the strongest OT class in recent memory and Okung is a 31 year old bandaid while both he and Moton are only on one year deals. OT at #7 needs to be in play.

Your logic has no place in Hurney world, where a 26 year old 5 time probowler (can't say with a straight face) is worth an injured 31 year old LT with a 1 year contract at face value. I expect a LT in this draft like I expect that 3rd or 4th round pick from the Turner trade to show up now. The injury prone 2nd year player he picked will just fill that spot and when that goes they way it's heading we will have to pick a new LT hope in a draft with bad LTs instead of this one with quality and depth at that position. #HurnyiaPain

One thing I love about the carolinahuddle is how seamlessly things like pro bowl appearances go from being entirely useless in assessing players to being the prevailing reason we were fleeced in a trade.

Also, from what I've read on twitter, Trai wanted a new contract from the Panthers before all this.

Because after his contract his probowl votes came from others droping out and name recognition? Still, not bad but not great since the ink dried. He used to be a beast but hasn't been that for some time. I do not have a problem with trading him, it's the value we got out of the trade. A good/solid OG should at least net more than cap space.

If he truly wanted a new contract before all this I could see how that would hamper the ability for the team to get better value out of it, don't you think? Who would be foolish enough to give us a pick and give him a new contract?

Besides as others have noted, if you are a team seeking a solid left tackle, you are not acquiring one without taking something on the chin. Guys expecting us to have robbed the Chargers like we did the Bears with Olsen many years ago were always going to be disappointed. Left tackle is a blue chip position of need.

I still see us drafting another offensive lineman in April at some point though unless some stellar defensive prospects fall to us.

And yet he is going to get that contract from the new team? Again, we didn't get anything of value except cap relief next offseson. The depth you speak of has to be healthy to be considered depth, unless you are counting depth of the insured reserve?

We have had plenty of LTs recently and none were close to blue chip value. If this was the Olsen trade, we are the Bears is all I am saying. I would have considered a 5th not bad for them dumping another dead contract on us while they got a starter. I do understand the devaluation of Turner requesting a new contract but I think you over value what we got in return.

After the Paridis debacle, I sadly wish you were right but I expect them to roll into next year with Little, Paridis and Okung as starters.

In terms of the possible value we could have received under another scenario I suppose we could argue about that for days. What I would hope we can both agree on is it would have been a waste of resources to consider another contract for Turner. I say that reluctantly because I have always liked Trai. I wish him well in his future endeavors. But this split was inevitable with all our needs, some of them being pretty dire.

As far as the health concerns of Okung and Paradis, I'm right there with you. We really need a run of better luck with the OL. It's been a house of horrors for the last decade through two different GM's aside from 2015. Man are we due.

I completely agree with everything you said.

Picking up Okung hasn't given me any hope of positive change unfortunately. I am fully expecting more of last year with a new blocking scheme.

    • I have never seen this cat play a single snap of football, BUT, I really hope that we're not counting on a 25 yo, UDFA who played 6 years of college ball to suddenly replace our starting LB.  Sounds to me like Dean Jones needed a story and didn't have anything else to write about. Wishing the guy luck though, cool nickname.
    • I'll go 1 further than that. This 23 year old had spent 4 years as a middle of the pack college player before exploding onto the scene as a 5th year senior, then we have enough faith in him to trade up 1 spot so that we can get a 5th year option and guarantee his salary. So in about a year's time he went from a mid round pick to a first rounder. It would be hard NOT to let that go to your head! I'm going to trust that the staff know what they're doing with XL and not give him too much crap about being a dumbass LAST season, as long as he doesn't continue to be one.
    • From Brugler's scouting report... Tavareon “Bam” Martin-Scott picked up his nickname because of the fireworks celebration he typically receives to celebrate his birthday. He grew up playing pee wee football in Fort Wayne, Ind., but developed late and was mostly a part-time player until his senior year at Snider High (alma mater of Jessie Bates). He posted 87 tackles and 6.0 sacks as a senior in 2018, but it wasn’t enough to put him on the recruiting radar. A no-star recruit, he played two seasons with Dodge City (Kan.) Community College and then received several SEC offers. His playing time and production gradually increased each season for the Gamecocks, and he put intriguing flashes on film. Martin-Scott is a good-sized athlete, with pursuit speed to match races to the perimeter. He competes with a banger mentality to pinball off blocks and stay determined on his path to the ball. Overall, Martin-Scott freelances a tad too much with inconsistent steps in coverage, but he is a classic run-and-hit linebacker who likes to play loose and chase plays — necessary ingredients for NFL special teams. grade: Free Agent
