I love how people will bitch about big oil, pharma giants and other predatory types of big business but then they'll own the stock. I've always despised the hypocrisy of acting as if your hands are clean when you're holding the stock. "I'm just an investor, I don't support the company." Nope. Doesn't work like that. If you own the stock, you're complicit. Period.

I'll hop off my soapbox now. 😂

I don't buy anything that I don't support.

It hurts me in the long run, but I don't care.

The world would be auch better place if everyone followed that model. I have a Tesla driving solar powered home greenie to the core buddy who was bragging about the money he'd made trading big oil stocks. I'm like, wait... WHAT?! He absolutely could not comprehend that buy owning the stocks he's complicit.

This entire economy thing is hilarious…if everyone cannot see that resources are dwindling at amazing rates and everyone can’t even buy groceries doesn’t tell you the state of the world nothing will.  Things are never going to be “normal” again.  Everyone better be prepared to live with less from now on

We are a society on the downslope of the bell curve and it will not go anywhere but down

eh, tech and innovation are still going to continue.  The leaps will continue to get bigger and faster IMO.   Crashes are a pretty consistent thing that occur.  I don't really consider the economy and market doing anything earth shattering.   Even a massive recession wouldn't be a game changer.  Would just a first time for some.

Hypothetical example

  • somebody is against oil companies
  • they make an effort not to own oil company stocks , instead deciding to invest only in companies they believe in
  • they believe in Coca Cola (or Pepsi, or Nestle, or some other manufacturer) and buy those stocks
  • those companies are reliant on plastics and transportation fuel, both of which require oil… the purchase of which directly supports the oil companies that the hypothetical person is against

All depends,on the companies and businesses/products, but there are going to be an almost infinite list of cross-usage scenarios that will contradict any single-focused investor

It is impossible not to contribute to oil companies in some manner in today's environment. That's just reality. But there's a big difference between that and being an active stockholder. You can't with any shred of intellectual honesty claim to give a single fug about the environment while holding big oil stock in the same way that you can't claim to give a single fug about improving our broken healthcare system while holding big pharma stocks.

I know the news is full of stories about outrageous medical bills.

Is some of that more related to crazy malpractice insurance that the docs need to maintain?  Or are you talking about how US drug prices are a bit higher vs other countries?

Other countries' medical systems aren't necessarily better than the US.  In many cases, you can get free care for whatever you need, but you may be on a waiting list for years

Amazon is going to open at $122 on Monday (post-split price).

Guesses on whether that'll jump because it's more affordable to the average investor, or not really any impact because folks can buy partial shares nowadays anyway?   On the bright side?  The recent days of $100 up/down price swings are temporarily over (to be replaced with $5-$10 price swings, I'm sure)

If the anticipated rate hike goes through its going to be a wild ride.

I honestly think at least 50 points is already priced in. Maybe more like 62.5 since a lot of people are expecting 75.

I expect 75. I think the Fed actually wants to do 100 but they realize that'd be the equivalent of yanking the e-brake on the home stretch of the Daytona 500. Yeah, it's a cold water fire hose on inflation but it's also gonna cause a fiery pileup of a crash. 😂
