Falcons angling for Chase Young

They did this before when they traded a ton of draft capital for Julio. Unless there is a franchise QB available you don’t give up a ton of picks to move up in my opinion.

It worked out for them with JJ.

It took the Falcons years to recover from that huge trade up to get Julio. They ended up getting a great player out of it, but they paid a heavy price for it in the short-term. I'd be okay with that scenario repeating itself.

Falcons downfall imo had little to do with the Julio trade, it was there inability to find a edge rusher and how they kept constantly trying to surround the offense with talent.

They only spent high draft capital on dbs, trufant, Neal, and the 2nd rounder that couldn’t stop getting suspended, hell the db they took after we drafted donte

But all that draft capital they had to give up could've really helped them. When you give up a ton of capital to address one weakness, it's highly likely that it'll contribute to other weaknesses elsewhere.

Assuming they would have spent the original '11 first on a WR anyways, they essentially were down a first and a second. Not great, but hardly a roster-crippling deficiency.

Did the JJ trade hurt in some areas, given the vet exodus? Sure, but not as much as 4 otherwise putrid draft classes.

Not really. They had trouble building a defense and Julio battles the injury bug too. Now he is demanding a large portion of their salary cap as well. They have been almost as inconsistent as we have really...

Poor drafting '09'-'12 coupled with huge portion of team's best players at the time (Abraham, Gonzalez, Turner, White, etc.) washing up at around the same time. The 'Julio Jones trade sunk the Falcons(!) for ~3 years' take is pretty lazy, IMO – I'd argue it was the only clearly good draft day move the team made in 4 years.

Atlanta thinking they are 1 player away is adorable

It's like the Panthers this past season signing everyone who was farting dust, thinking they were about to be Pro Bowlers again, and we'd suddenly be a Super Bowl team despite being about 3 years too late.

I’d agree, Julio and the picks were the least of the problems the falcons had given after he was drafted they went to the playoffs back to back years and the years prior they might have been one of the more consistent winners in the nfl.

it’s a no brainer, you make that trade 100/100 times easily for a hof WR and arguable the best one this past decade.

Mack going a pick before Matthews hurt the franchise more than the Julio trade

I mean it worked for them, but at the same time if it turns out like any of the Lions "HoF sure fire" WRs of the 2000s, then suddenly the Falcons are the biggest bunch of idiots the league has seen. Just because it worked, doesn't make it the rule.

I don't think anyone's arguing it's a rule – if anything, everyone's saying trading up is more likely to go awry.

He's just saying 'any GM in the league would give 2 ~mid-20s firsts and a ~mid-50s second for a 21 year old Julio Jones,' which is hard to dispute. Props to Dimitroff for spotting the opportunity (or at least getting lucky), because the rest of his drafts around that era sucked big time.

Just for the record, nothing personal but if you guys somehow get Chase Young, then curse you and everything you stand for

If we do somehow draft Chase Young, he'll suck. Just ask any of the edge-rushers we've drafted in the past 15 years.

Keep in mind year 2 julio missed like 12 games with a broken foot. But since then they have been to 2 NFC championship games...several play off appearances..and had a lot of winning seasons. Before that i dont think they ever had back to back winning seasons before 11 got there. I dont see that as a recovery.

Won’t matter much. They’d give up so many draft picks that by the time we get back to competitive they’ll be a bottom feeder.
