$8 mil not bad for gadget player that can be 3rd qb. Ill laugh my ass off if Payton can turn Jameis into a non-turnover machine in that system.

Using the round numbers being thrown around right now, its not a $8M deal.  Its either a 1 year $16M deal or a 2 year $21M deal ($10.5M/year).

Year Total Liabilities Salary Cap (Projected) Cap Room
2020 $192,961,208 $198,002,730 $5,041,522
2021 $223,780,615 $215,000,000 ($8,780,615)
2022 $124,607,827 $227,500,000 $102,892,173
2023 $75,720,000 $241,000,000 $165,280,000
2024 $38,025,000 $256,000,000 $217,975,000

The above doesn't reflect a new Taysom deal or Jameis, and I broke it down a little more in the Jameis thread, but if they don't win it in 2020 IMO they're done.  @ncfan hit a few of the guys above, but you can add in a few more names like Larry Warford or Sheldon Rankins. List also includes a Pro Bowler like Demario Davis up for a new deal.  They could easily need to pull 40 million out of thin air to re-sign those guys without factoring in extensions for Lattimore of Ramczyk.

As usual, when Brees retires that should do it for them contending.  He'll also leave behind a huge chunk of dead money that makes Matt Kalil blush. Not many paths to them clearing space either, which means a chance of them losing something like Brees, Kamara, and a couple other good starters after 2020.

That's nice.

Fun fact, while many current NFL general managers have degrees in economics and other fields, only one has a degree in accounting. Would you like to guess who that might be?

He might be a bean counter, but he's the best bean counter in the league, bar none.

The Saints went 7-9 for 3 straight years because they had no room against the cap and there drafts were terrible.  They had 1 great draft in 2017 and all of those players are on their rookie deal.  In 2021, they have 205 million that counts toward the cap right now.  Before any of the 2017 players are signed and before any of their current rookies are signed.  Every year they cut or resturcture half a dozen players to get under the cap.   Brees is a lot like Brady right now for them in that he covers up a lot of holes.  When he retires they will have no room to sign a replacement and the way they keep trading away draft picks, no way to draft a QB either.  Hill better be a good QB.

Don't forget they have crab legs now too.

Even if they implode two years from now I’m not sure how you say the joke is on them...they’re and have been riding a fun rollercoaster

we cap implode on the meri go round with broken and rusty horses every year

hurney needs to go over and show them how it’s done

Good catch.  He's about a year younger than Russell Wilson and 2 years younger than Matt Stafford.  Wow.

Saints ensuring they have a QB they want on the roster for next season and not have the same situation they had this season with all three able to be FA; Brees is expected to retire. From what I've read and heard, several inside the Saints org were surprised he came back this season.
