New Panthers starting QB......Teddy "Ball Game" Bridgewater

Yeah, consistent "average Joe" just doesn't get it done in today's NFL. Back in the 80s and 90s? Sure. You could win Super Bowls with average consistent QBs backed with a solid running game and protected by a stout D. The NFL wants high flying big scoring offenses though because that's what excites the casual viewer and they've kept changes the rules and will keep changing the rules to get it. Adapt or die. If you don't have a QB capable of putting up 30+ TDs you don't have a shot. The Chiefs didn't give Mahomes half a billion because of consistency. They gave him that because he's a guy who can turn a two score 4th quarter deficit into a two score Super Bowl win.

Disagree.

49ers

Eagles

Vikings

Broncos (old P Manning wasn’t that great...)

Jaguars

Patriots (late Brady is not that great)

even the damn Titans...

Plenty of teams in the last 5 years making deep playoff runs and super bowl appearances without an ‘exciting qb’. Even when saints and chiefs starting qbs went dow ...

Consistency and surround them with an elite team will work pretty damn well. Need a scheme to compliment players and a coach that will adapt. Problem is Hurney isn’t capable of that IMO. The biggest weakness in this FO as of now.

I think Panther fans are used to Madden esque Cam highlight reels and the Panthers relying on him too much doing it all. But in reality his highlight reels didn’t do the team any good.

Hell in the best game stretches Cam ever had he had very pedestrian numbers just spreading the ball around and being consistent.

Dude has never thrown less that 20tds and 3500 yards in any full season he has played.

His worst season would be a career best for Teddy two gloves.

Has a lot to do with scheme and coaching than play.

We've had deep playoff runs and SB appearances. Aren't consolation prizes and bridesmaid trophies getting a little old? Though you're probably right, with Teddy Bridgewater at QB and a likely (well) below average unit on the other side of the ball, we'll probably be begging for a return to the good old days of consolation prizes and bridesmaid trophies. I just hope we get that really high draft pick that might land the guy who can maybe one day get us over that hump.

I’m not discrediting a franchise QB. I just think a player like Cam  doing it all putting on highlight reels randomly is less important than consistency. I much prefer the 2015/early 2017 Cam spreading the ball around, making smarter and shorter throws.

What fan wouldn’t want a Mahomes? But we have to be realistic and rebuilding with a new coach from a 5-11 team, we are only in the running for consolation prizes. Outside of 2015 the Panthers were a one and done playoff team, IF they made it. Unless you count beating the Cardinals third string QB and then moving on to show they had absolutely no business being in the playoffs. The Panthers have always been begging for consolation prizes, whether Teddy is here or not.

I don’t think we don’t need a high draft pick if we look at the best QBs in the game today...

Brady - Round 6

Jackson - 32nd pick

Brees - Round 2/32nd pick

Rodgers - 24th pick

Mahomes - 10th pick

Wilson - Round 3/75th pick

Watson 12th pick

Stafford, Wentz, Tannehil, Rothlosburger were high picks.

What this team desperately needs is a competent GM to build a team and make that draft pick along with more new age coaching mindset . More important than a highlight reel player, and is what most the teams that made it without Mahomes have.

That’s going to be the difference. How do we do this you ask, since we rehired the fired GM? I have no clue.

    • Except it takes those QB's a few years to develop because they needed to learn the mental side of the game and have it catch up to their physical attributes. Bryce was supposed to be a QB savant who already had a fully developed mental side of the game and that was going to make up for his lack of physical ability.  And his lack of NFL level QB physical traits has been clear as day to anyone who has watched him the last 3 years, mainly, he just doesn't have an NFL arm, he can't zip the ball into tight spaces or throw on a line down the field like is needed at this level.
    • Don’t recall seeing many of his interviews but what strikes me is that he engages and goes in depth. Even with the cliche answers as referenced by OP come across somewhat thoughtful.  Very likable personality despite being someone who can crush an average person like I can crush a paper cup. I knew Motons mother had a career at MSU but was looking on the google and found that Mushin Muhammad personally knew Motons grandfather.   His late grandfather was a professor at MSU.   Cool guy.  Interesting family and small world.
    • I think people aren’t patient enough with Young. It can take a few years for a QB to develop. Look at Darnold, Baker and most recently Daniel Jones.   he hasn’t been able to put up big passing numbers either cause of how much we run the ball. You can tell our coaching staff still hasn’t took the training wheels off Bryce and let him go all out. We’ve had some pretty bad receivers as well. We finally got a true number one last year and look how much Bryce improved. Still we didn’t really have any depth behind TMac. Coker was hurt for a lot of the year and XL was our #2. How many big plays or TDs has XL dropped? I think this year can be the year we see Bryce able to hit his stride. If not then we can start looking for another qb but I just ask people to be patient.
