Risers and Fallers - Panthers at Chargers

The Carolina Panthers managed to hold on to a lead and defeat the Los Angeles Chargers, but which individuals had a better day than others?

Here are the risers and fallers of the game as I see it.

RISERS

Backup running back Mike Davis showed that Panthers coach Matt Rhule knew what he was talking about when he said Davis is a starting quality runningback in the NFL. Davis showed excellent ability in catching the ball as well as providing a punch at the point of contact. I am no longer concerned about the Carolina Panthers running back position with Christian McCaffrey on IR.

Rookie phenom Jeremy Chinn had 12 tackles, tying for the most in one game by a Panthers' rookie defensive back. Chinn's 26 tackles leads all NFL rookies through three weeks. I am supremely excited to see this young man develop further.

Panthers kicker Joey Slye makes his debut on the risers list. Slye went 5 for 5 on field goals. You can't ask for much more from a kicker. Well done, Swole.

Fallers

We are three weeks into the season and Tre Boston has appeared on my fallers list every single week. He is the only player to have done so. Boston's bouncing off of the Chargers' ball carrier was as excruciating to watch as it was expected. Free Safety continues to be a dire need.

Offensive tackle Trent Scott had a rough go against his former team. His play brought back memories of guys named Bell and Chandler. Those were not good memories. Hopefully Okung is healthy this week and we won't see much more of Scott ever again.

Who are your risers and fallers?

The only reason I can see them still putting Samuel out there is to try to get someone to trade for him. Something. anything.

If Bonnafon got all his snaps who would be upset?

I can't think of one thing Samuel does that other current panthers can't do better.

i've created a new stat for dante jackson and trey boston.  its called 'slow-downs'.  its not a tackle, its when they slowed the ball carrier down.  when you incorporate this stat it tells you things

we know what Djax is at this point, and it's not a tackler.

I'm actually not that upset with that because what he is is useful, as long as there are people that ARE tacklers.

Donte Jackson cannot physically take on a blocker or crash down into the box. he will die. he is built like a sprinter.

although that said this is two weeks in a row i thought he was going to house a TD and he didn't.

i mean when he gets the ball in his hands he's crazy fast.

still, dante and trey combined for 6 slow downs yesterday.

    • It would be nice to see the Canales playbook with a QB that can throw 20+ yards.  Think we'd get that with White. So he throws some picks?  Don't care.
    • No doubt, Lawrence is supremely more physically talented than Bryce, although that’s a really low bar.  That being said, I asked ChatGPT the other day which WB Bryce Young most closely mirrored and it said EXACTLY Trevor Lawrence.  I was actually blown away by how similar their stats are.  I have heard more recent rumblings that Jacksonville was growing restless with him but without looking at the numbers, I couldn’t understand why.  I had no idea he has struggled that badly for the duration of his pro career.  Watching him in college, he seemed like he was going to be a sure fire franchise QB.  All that being said, I’d still take him a million times over Bryce and alternatives like Mac Jones.
    • I commented on a different thread but I don’t think he’s involved at the same level. Even the media has reported it. Looking back, no wonder he was so involved with Rhule and Fitterer in the same building, I would be too. I think he backed up after 2023. Now, he probably has some type of meeting with Morgan/Canales but probably not like with Rhule, I would want to know what was going on too. I think his meetings with Rhule were probably more like a PIP meeting. You really don’t hear from him much anymore. I think if they were going to trade a certain player (Derrick Brown, Jaycee Horn, etc) or make a big signing they would get his “blessing” but it’s likely they have autonomy. They could probably bench Bryce and he wouldn’t veto it, he obviously didn’t before.
