Panthers Injury Update - Burns in concussion protocol

CHARLOTTE — Of the four players who exited Sunday's win in Atlanta and did not return, only cornerback Donte Jackson (toe) participated in Wednesday's practice.

Jackson was on the field in a limited capacity after playing just one snap against the Falcons. Defensive end Brian Burns (concussion) was at practice during the portion open to media but was in a red jersey. He did not participate.

Head coach Matt Rhule announced after practice that defensive tackle Kawann Short will undergo season-ending surgery on his right shoulder after injuring it in the third quarter on Sunday. Short will be placed on the reserve/injured list.

Rhule did not have an update on defensive end Yetur Gross-Matos (ankle), who was not on the field.

Slated to start for Short, defensive tackle Zach Kerr was limited on Wednesday with a toe injury, as was wide receiver Curtis Samuel (knee).

Cornerback Eli Apple (hamstring) was also a limited participant. After returning from the reserve/injured list in Week 4, Apple played only six special teams snaps before injuring the opposite hamstring that sidelined him during training camp. He was a limited participant last Wednesday but sat out Thursday's and Friday's sessions.

While Christian McCaffrey (high ankle sprain) is eligible to return from IR this week, Rhule said the running back would not be activated just yet. McCaffrey's original timetable to return was 4-6 weeks, and he's missed only three games to this point.

"He's working to get back, and as soon as we can get him back, we'll get him back," Rhule said.

We won't know until Saturday. He has indicated to people he thinks he will but really only the doctors and test results dictate it.

Thanks. I feel like he is our most important player on defensive line right now to generate pressure on the QB

    • Let’s be real, there’s no way the Bengals can trade him for less than first round value from an optics stand point.
    • Disclaimer:  In June, I am usually optimistic.  In October, a policeman with a bullhorn is telling me that I have a lot of life ahead of me and to think about my loved ones as I gaze down upon him from my rooftop.   Having said that, I think our offense (down the stretch) was good enough to play KC and Philly tough.  So how many games would this offense have won if they played the entire season like they did in November-January and if they had a better defense?   If you could stretch the last nine games over an entire season and put a solid defense on the other side, I see 5 wins becoming 7 or 8.  Down the stretch, the Panther D surrendered 30 points or more in 5 of the final 7 games and managed to win 2 of those 5.  If they can win 40% of games in which their defense surrenders 30 points or more, then the math indicates, had that been the case all season, the Panthers should have won 6 or 7 games with their defense surrendering 30+ points.   This season, we are much better at WR (TMac, Renfrow, Horn, and I expect XL to be a lot better).  Bryce is confident and now a leader.    The Achilles' heel of the 2024 defense, the DL, seems to be very solid.  We got back Horn and Jackson on the corners, Smith-Wade is improving better than expected, we signed a stud Safety.  Derrick Brown returns.  While the D is not there yet, it is going to be better.   So if we ended the second half of 2024 playing at a level that should have produced 6-7 wins, better WRs and a better defense could result in 9 wins or more.
