Still trying to trade Burns?

Who the hell was trying to trade Burns?

There were a bunch of threads about it in the offseason, mainly about him not being a fit in the 4-3 that Snow would run. I recall being open to trading him for the right haul back then due to some question marks about his fit in the scheme (stupid in hindsight), but there were also others who would've been fine if we gave him away because they considered it a "wasted pick by the previous regime who ran a different scheme."

Now, I wouldn't trade him for anything that a team would consider. Every player in the league has a price (even guys like Mahomes, Wilson, Jackson, etc.) but Burns is about as close as untouchable as it gets for us. Any price we'd accept, nobody would be willing to pay.

I'd honestly argue that Burns is the most important player on our team right now. We all saw what happened to our pass rush when he went out against Atlanta. And he almost singlehandedly kept our defense in the game against the Aints... McCaffrey is our best player, no doubt, but the dropoff from him to Davis is less of an impact than the dropoff from Burns to whoever, and it's at one of the most important positions in the game right now. I can't think of a more important Panther right now. You could say Teddy because of QB and our backups, but I'd still go with Burns being more important to this team.

Ah ok I guess that makes some sense and is at least a slightly defensible position. I wasn’t around during the offseason.

Yeah I can understand the mindset that I had at the time looking back of -- if we can get a relatively high 1st round pick + in return for Burns, maybe you consider it since he seemed to be a better fit in a 3-4 than a 4-3 at the time.

Looking back though, it's clear as day that the dude is just an insanely talented pass rusher in any scheme, and those guys don't grow on trees. His level of importance here is so high that any potential trade wouldn't make sense for both parties. Would have to be an insane overpayment, and Bill O'Brien is out of the league now....

    • Ha-ha, I bet that went through everyone's mind.  Admittedly I don't read all the comments in a thread before I make a post. Great minds think alike!
    • Cam was hitting his stride as a QB in 2017/2018.     This is why I think stats like completion percentage are overrated. As long as a QB is clutch and makes the throws to win the game the rest doesn’t really matter. What good is a check down stat padder if they’re a choker.  Until Norv Turner (and briefly Chud) got here we put Cam in high pressure throwing situations all the time. We also ran the ball on first down more than most teams in the NFL in the Ron era. Coupled with shitty WRs, all that is expressed in his stats. I also assume Cam took the ball in his hands on many occasions rather than trust Funchess to catch the ball.    It was also never Cams job to play the game like someone else. His presence on the field dictated the game in a way that is rarely seen.  He showed he could play the dink and dunk game just before TJ Watt. That didn’t suddenly make him better than his earlier seasons. He just got put in a legit under center  passing game again for first time since his rookie year with Chud.    Ron took the quickest path to success and abused the RPO because his ass was about to get fired.    Cam never got the credit for being the cerebral player that he was. I just think when you are legitimately a human Superman, sometimes the best play is having the ball in your hands. He was a better passer than Delhomme was.
    • I don't think Canales has any problem benching Bryce or moving on if Bryce doesn't come out playing like the end of last year.  It's year 3 no more excuses for Bryce
