How much time is enough time to tell whether we've been snowed?

Just a guess, but some of these penalties may simply be players attempting to compensate for being overmatched rather than a lack of discipline.  Regardless, the penalties are killing this team, especially on third downs when they can't seem to close the deal and get off the field.

Interesting thought.  May be something to look into.

Bill Voth noted that of the six penalties called on us last night, five were on the defense.

Well, the vast majority of offensive penalities are committed by the OL. If we were committing penalties on the OL while being that porous that would truly be something to behold.

I admittedly pay more attention to the little nuances of the offense, but I ain't really feeling Phil Snow right now. I am not ready to essentially call him a bust (like I did after three or four games of seeing Shula orchestrate our offense), but I just don't know if dude is putting players in the best position to succeed. Gap integrity is lacking. Opposing receivers give "in the zone" a whole new meaning as they home in on the soft spots without much pushback. Don't get me wrong, I would like to see what Snow can accomplish with more talent in the middle and back of the defense, but it's not like we are totally bereft of talent, but it's midseason, and I want to start seeing some consistency. Perhaps more man coverage, schemes and blitzes might be in order. At this point, anything's worth a try. Bend-don't-break has never been my favorite defensive philosophy (or reality), especially when it appears you're getting lucky half the time. And there is little excuse for continual drive-extending penalties week after week. Snow needs to tighten up! I am trying to be patient, but if we're still looking the same this time next year, I'll be saying, "We can't let things snowball!"

Get ready to get bombarded with he's doing the most with ???.  He's doing g great considering...blah blah blah, as I git in my thread Phil Snow's Defense

All respect to Voth, but the league has slanted it this way for years.  The rules simply favor defensive penalties, coupled with the absolute REFUSAL to call offensive holding this year, sort of makes this sort of thing inevitable.

Yeah, I don't see this defense as talentless. I am not buying it. I know they're young and all that, and mistakes will be made, but it would be nice to see even small increments of progress and consistency. After seeing what they can do as opposed to what many thought they would do, the I-thought-they-would-stink-so-Snow-is-overachieving rationale is not quite doing it for me.

What could they do? We were missing our starting SS, our #1 CB, our #2 CB was limited by injury, and our starting FS is Tre Boston. If we were blitzing like crazy and getting beat deep we'd probably be giving up TDs instead of FGs.

Plus Whitehead played MLB and YGM is hurt and KK is hurt.

I mean, it's not like I am basing an opinion on one game. And, I also said that he deserves a certain amount of time. I don't think that another year is too much to ask to see some marked progress.

I don’t understand some of you people. It’s the youngest defense in a decade with no offseason. We are already playing better than last years defense even though we have half the talent, first year in a new system, and the two reasons also listed above. Give me a break...he is exceeding expectations this year. I expected us to be historically bad after watching last years squad and seeing who left in the offseason. Jackson with a bum toe was our number one starting cb yesterday....

Blah blah blah, but you never answered the question. It seems some of you only want to pontificate about how crazy some are. Snow deserves some time, but he doesn't deserve unlimited time, and small increments of progress and consistency are NOT too much to ask for, as there must be some level of evaluation---some standard other than "the team doesn't suck as much as I thought it would," or "the defense is made of chicken poo"

    • Another layer to that is Ive seen Seattle has been in the market for CB help this off-season.   Michael had a higher PFF grade than Horn who got 15 games this season. He wants to be here too, that's a huge bonus for any 5 win team that had awful pass rush.  The 7th rounder Michael Barrett didn't last long on Seattle, he was cut before the season I think and ended up on browns PS. He's already been on 5.......5 teams within one year.......
    • You have gave the board some recent gold via posting. Heres my poor attempt at the truthful play-by-play of the time during post- I pulled out the old laptop to do my shitposting and check on websites. Open the huddle and see this new thread. Open thread and read CRAs post, {inner thinking, oooOOooo this is my lane and I got this}. Make sure not to scroll even to the 2nd post. 23% of current neurons still firing start up and two names appear- Captain and Josh....... about another 43 seconds past "O GOD" it's July 4th weekend and I got medicine to pick up. (If the laptop didn't give away my aging, the meds should...) I need to split, think long panther careers and the hint-  Ryan Kalil was a late 2nd and Pro bowls(even all-pros too) he's got to be OLman and Mikie Minter is among the all-time Panthers career leaders. Drop my post. Scramble to get keys, wallet, and phone. Check my phone- its 17% battery.....fug I now have to raw dog the pickup line and put the phone on charge.... Flip flops, sweat ringed filled hat, and shades acquired. Get in my pos rav4 and think about not running the A/C. Pull out the drive way and reach the 1st stop light, A/C is wide open. I check my shirt to see if there's any new stains on my house shirt, bush off the Bojangles salt that I see.... Neurons re-fire and focus on the comments CRA made that no one would get this....... Dang IT, that means it isn't Ryan Kalil or Mike Minter! CVS is close, but I know its impossible I get back withing 10 minutes to change my post and my phone is on the charger. {Think you monkey, at one point you were a draft nerd}. Reach the CVS line, by some grace its not 5 cars deep during 5 o'clock traffic hell. Im second in line after the car in front of me both turn in, they have to go back and forth to line up while Im a pro for that geometry. Neurons finally reach peak performance as Ive re-thought draft classes. Think obscure and unknown 7th rounders with long careers. Some Sunday/Monday night member berry fell out of my Melon, Will montgomery during the players intros for washington. I thought he out of the league and was shocked to see him still playing around the 2015 years. I do a goggle background check and that refreshed memory. Pick up the meds and enjoy the sweet smelling cool CVS air. Driving back and check in on one of the local bums at the big stop light, wow he's got a new fancy rug. Think about all the old food I got and need to start giving it away and rethink it. Reach home and post a follow up and I know Minter is wrong too, I check the draft history and see Robert Mcclain. Too late, but that would have been my guess....open CRAs link and get "upset" at the DBs name.
    • THANKS my guy! Keeping up with this threads theme, if I view a thread and there's only 20 posts and some time passes. If I see there's one new post and read the name; @Dave Gettleman's Shortsis among the chosen few that I will reopen that thread just to see what you posted.    Thanks again, plus not just a scout, thats scotty mccloughans son?!?!? If not for the deep claws of booze, scotty is among the best talent finders this league has recently had. Last I heard he ran a consulting business. Caden could be one of those who's on a early path to being a GM in the future. I was a big fan of his dad, dam shame about booze demon ruining his career.
