BYU QB Coach: NFL teams very interested in Wilson

Like him more than Trey Lance for sure. If you watch that one game Trey Lance played this year you will have to wash your eyes out after lol. Granted, I know the kid had a lot of pressure on him and couldn't prepare properly due to covid but he just doesn't look NFL ready. He is going to get drafted by a team that has the luxury of picking him in hope for his upside and high ceiling. I think Wilson's ceiling is a little bit lower but his floor is much higher.

Not quite, more thinking of someone like the Titans or 49ers. Who knows though, we could full send it. We are more than likely going to be picking top 10 so if that is the case and Fields and Lawrence are already gone , I'd rather go BPA on O lineman, CB , and Micah Parsons. If Marty Hurney wanted to suddenly start trying to play chess, this would be a good year to trade down if the board doesn't fall how we want it to, and build up a lot of draft capital for the 2022 draft class because that will be a very good QB draft class as well. We all know Hurney is far to incompetent to trade down though, lol only trade up for prospects that could easily fall to where he was already at.

Ah, I get what you're saying although I'm not sure the Titans are in that position given their DL trouble. Still, I think Lance would be a natural fit for us just because we have Teddy for two more years. It'd a good situation for him to come in and get groomed up behind Teddy, his main issues are things brought on by a lack of competition such as some occasionally wonky ball placement and slight inconsistency on his throws. But the kid has a lot of talent, and we'd be one of the better situations he can land in among the top 10 teams.

Personally, I am big on Lance so I wouldn't be opposed at all to him at 9; but generally I am in the same camp as well. If Parsons fell I just don't see how you pass up on him.

As my significant other is a BYU alum, I’ve watched every game

the only truly difficult team in the schedule was Houston and he did well

BYU’s schedule is  truly week because of COVID. I do not know how Wilson would do against a SEC defense

I do know he is accurate and smart.  Is that enough to go top 10 in the Nfl draft with the likes of Lawrence or fields, I don’t think so but better than Lance and Trask, probably

I’m of the opinion that I want a QB that has been against the toughest competition under the big lights vs say North Dakota State or a team like BYU that’s not playing tough competition these days.

It's rare to have a civil back and forth on here I feel like haha but yeah I totally agree. Really hoping the Falcons don't end up getting him somehow because that would also be a very good situation for them to put more money into the defense in 2 years and make them a very good team honestly. This is one of the few drafts of recent memory for me that I have no clear idea of what position we are really going to be gunning for with so many places we could upgrade which really scares the hell out of me with Hurny's positional value. Don't get it twisted, I know he generally is a home run hitter in the 1st but we better not reach for someone.

Yeahhh.. Atlanta would be bad since he'd be learning from a good QB contrast to a mediocre one. I think we'll probably end up going BPA, but a lot of it depends on if Hurney develops a man crush for one of the QBs or not. As for Atlanta, I'm honestly not sure what they do. On one hand; the team is good on paper and has building blocks. On the other, they've really just looked bad out there since that fateful day in 2017. I honestly don't think they ever got over that SB loss because they still collapse later in games. I mean how else could you explain these excruciating losses they've had to endure for the years since? On top of that, Julio and Matt are getting older and might not be the same in 2 years. I definitely wouldn't want to be their new GM who has to come in and make that decision.

Here's the current value chart for 2021.

So if we're at 6/7, it's 2021 and 2022 2nd rounders with maybe something + to sweeten the pot (player, later-rounder).  I could get with that because we'll have a high 3rd rounder, which we could also turn into a 3rd and extra 4th with a trade down.  Super speculative but...

#3 overall: Wilson (or Fields) QB

+3rd-Center

4th-OL/LB/CB

+4th-OL/LB/CB

5th-OL/LB/CB

6th-OL/LB/CB

7th-OL/LB/CB

I just don’t see how he can leap Justin Fields for being the second QB off the board. You’re talking Lawrence and Fields who have been huge for multiple seasons now against better competition. Wilson is having a breakout year in a poor conference and his numbers still aren’t anything I’d put him over on Justin Fields.

Fields is completing 86.7% of his passes and thrown 11 TDs to 0 INTs and rushed for 2 more TDs to 0 fumbles. 13 scores to 0 turnovers.

Wilson is over 10 points lower in completion percent and has turned the ball over more against lesser completion.

Wilson is averaging 3.75 touchdowns a game combined. Fields is at 4.33 a game.

Fields career numbers in college now are 70% completion, 56 passing TDs and only 3 interceptions. Both the film and the stats show an elite player who has been consistently great. Wilson has been up and down until this year. Similar to Jordan Loves career.

I think Fields goes second but I'll play devils advocated just because people seem confused about how scouting works.

Because scouts aren't looking at just stats.  They are looking for traits that translate to the next level.  Maybe a large percentage of Fields throws are one read throws?  Maybe Wilson has shown more of an ability to go through progressions.

I'm not saying this is the case, I'm just saying these are things that scouts look for when evaluating players, casual fans get way to caught up on just the stats.

The issue is that often times these trade ups when there's a QB sitting there wind up being wayyyy higher than these trade value charts. If somehow Jags move down the order to like 3rd or 4th overall and it's Jets and Cowboys or Giants at 2 (and they are sticking with Dak/Jones) then it would be an absolute no brainer to trade up to get Field at 2 if it only cost two 2nd rounders and some random non-core player or other late round pick. But if it's Jets/Jags at the top of the draft there's zero chance we'd get Lawrence or Fields.

That is very much the case from what I’ve seen. Not saying Fields won’t be able to do it in the NFL, but 99% of his passes that I’ve seen are one read passes whereas I’ve seen Wilson consistently go through his reads and pick the best target, whether it was back to the first read or the third or fourth guy.  Not saying I necessarily like Wilson over Fields, but in that one category (and it’s a big one), Wilson has a distinct advantage.

Yep, I'm moreso targeting Pick #3 in this case.

If we are within the top-8, I think we could be able to swing it if we really want Wilson (or Fields if the Jags for example end up 2 and fall for him)

Never know! But I totally agree on the value being much higher when it's a potential franchise QB at the top of the draft.
