The path to becoming a coach or GM...

Mr. Scot

Recommended Posts

... might now be a little harder.

Over the past few years, the NFL Career Development Advisory Panel annually recommended highly qualified candidates for head coaching and GM jobs. As of now though, the NFL has disbanded that panel.

NFL disbands Career Development Advisory Panel

The reasoning behind it is apparently that some folks believed the members of the panel were using it to push their friends and favorites to the best jobs. Honestly, that's not real hard to believe.

On a related note, the NFL also released a list of qualified minority candidates for coaching and GM jobs (here). No surprise that Eric Bienemy heads the coaching list, well Saints Assistant GM Terry Fontenot and Bills Assistant College Scouting Director (and former Panther interviewee) Lake Dawson show up on the GM side.

Huddle's path to becoming a GM is to CRUSH Madden Franchise Mode or be really good at Fantasy Football.

The Sean McVay-Matt LeFleur-Arthur Smith-Vandy Endowment crew is the young circle that's being propped up regardless.

I fully expect Arthur Smith to be hired this coming offseason and wouldn't be surprised if Bienemy still doesn't land a HC gig.

I think pretty much everybody expects the NFL to push Bienemy hard.

He has the resumé for sure, but when you're working for a coach who's a genius people are always asking how much is you and how much is that coach.

Belichick's underlings have not exactly dispelled that thought when they have gone on their own.

Of course, one disadvantage to getting hired in the NFL is that unless somebody good retires, they will be hired by a team that just had to fire their HC.  That is usually done for a reason.

So, if you are Bienemy, this year you have your pick of the Lions, Jets, Texans, or the pick of the litter, the Falcons.  And there may be others, but you won't likely be the head coach of the Chiefs, Steelers, Bills, Saints, Packers, or Seahawks.

Andy Reid's coaching tree is kind of a mixed bag.

Doug Pederson won a Super Bowl in Philadelphia but now there's talk he might be fired.

Matt Nagy hasn't exactly set the world on fire in Chicago.

And then there's Ron Rivera. You might have heard of him.

What's your prediction?

Will Bieniemy (2 i's, 2 e's) be offered a position as head coach this time around?

Lynn may be out in LA which would be attractive with Herbert.

I forgot about them (but the Chargers have always been easy to forget about).  The safe money is Lynn is out  and yet another change is coming for them.

I agree, that could become the pick of the available jobs.  Herbert could go through a "sophomore slump" as teams have more film on him, but I have seen nothing to indicate that if he does, he will not come out of it fine.  That makes it a very attractive job, especially compared to the rest.

Lynn is toast. He is often the sole reason they lose games.

Roster wise, it may be a great job.

Ownership wise, not so much.

Ownership wise, none of these jobs is exactly a plum.  Atlanta is probably the best of them, but their cap situation is sketchy, at best.

Considering overall factors, this group is like choosing which devil you want to deal with.

    • Great article on all the Lil Canes attending their debutantes ball. Walt with a great breakdown of all the rookies, as always, and I'm a huge fan of his team coverage, he is truly a treasure, but as a fan of mixed metaphors and superfluous language which some might ignorantly refer to as a "run-on sentence" I never really understood what that mean or where to put the comma after a quote in the middle of a sentence, but holy poo Walt, this is a gem, "While there's a long road left in front of them left to determine whether or not they'll have that same success on the blue line again, the beginning stretch of the journey has been thrown a wrench, and the story on defense has been the emergence of up-and-comers forced into becoming lineup regulars." , bravo, take a bow, sir!
    • How do I activate said Krispy Kreme deal? I'm stoned man you can't be playing with me about this...
    • When the broadcast showed the two benches side by side during the last TV timeout, it was pretty obvious the whole operation is a shitshow. If I was the owner, I would play that clip, with commentary, on the jumbotron at MSG as I fired the coach, GM, President, the whole lot. Bring in your AHL leadership team, wholesale, to finish out the season and start from scratch next year.  Can't fire all the players and fold the season. But, hopefully decapitating the zombie will light a fire under the body and burn out the cancer of the roster. (It makes sense if you don't think about it...) There are obviously issues on the roster. But, you can't have the entire coaching staff completely tuned out with 5 minutes left in a 2 goal game this early in the season. And you can't trust the people that hired them to hire the next staff. If you trust your AHL GM/Scouts, let them run the deadline firesale.   ...     Please don't let the owner read any of this. Because, this poo is hilarous!
