I'm A Jets Fan Who's Hated Every QB We've Had Since Namath; Ask Me Anything

Why is it called The Big Apple?

Can Darnold be fixed/rehabbed/reprogrammed/ etc?

Horse Racing.

If he can, I don't think it happens before you have to commit big money to him.  While the Jets have been a mess, Darnold just doesn't see the field well.  His "off-script" talent is very much a byproduct of rolling out, cutting down his decision making.  I'm sure you've seen the highlights by now.  There's some incredible stuff in there.  But, what you don't see with him often is just standard good QB stuff.  Step up, deliver the strike on the 15-yard out.

And, you have to figure out how to get rid of the YOLO balls, and that's sort of his panic reaction.

You are starting a franchise and you have the choice between Mitch Trubisky, Sam Darnold and Jameis Winston. Which are you taking and why?

Seppuku.

Winston.  If I'm taking a guy who's terrible, I might as well take the one who throws TD passes from time to time.

Fun fact as to why the Jets have been so bad.  It was widely rumored that, when they had a QB stable of Josh McCown, Bryce Petty, and Christian Hackenberg, they drafted Jamal Adams because out of Trubisky, Watson, and Mahomes, the ONLY QB the GM thought was worth a high pick, was Trubisky.

Don't know how much you know about our roster, but give us your best W/L guess with Darnold leading the charge.*

*Assume we draft a couple of stud OL in the first two rounds.

The only way I could answer this question is to say I don't see Darnold as meaningfully better than Bridgewater.  He's got more upside based on physical traits, but Bridgewater is going to be more steady.  I get why you guys made the trade, youth and upside and thinking the dumb Jets are dumb, but this has to be more of a reclamation project.

Additionally, Darnold struggles with downfield accuracy, and Robby Anderson had his best season with you guys and Bridgewater, to the point where Jets fans largely regret letting him go.  That's the only direct comparison I can make, of course.  I suspect having a real RB will help him, as it helps any QB.

But, wins and losses depends on too many factors, including who you play.  When Darnold returned from Mono (LOL), he went 6-2.  However, on a deeper dive, we faced something like 5 of the 6 worst defenses (per Football Outsiders) over that stretch.  Our schedule was such that we were always going to start slow, with or without him - it was heavily front-loaded with our toughest games.

I suppose the next year will tell us a quite a lot about our offensive coaching staff. Yes, I see it.

I wouldn't let Darnold's performance effect your evaluation of your coaching staff too much, at least in the negative.

The architect of the Super Bowl winning defense was fired here after Darnold's rookie year, and thrown under the bus for him.  Bowles, probably had to go anyway, but Darnold's lackluster rookie year was the nail in the coffin.  Ultimately, he's been bad for 3 years, and was really not very good in his Junior Year at USC, but lived off of hype from his Sophomore year, and specifically, that Rose Bowl game.

If he improves, then that's something to certainly feel good about.  If he doesn't, my questions would be more for your front office, and why they thought they could?  Was it all because, blame the Jets?  Still, your investment was not all that much, at least in the trade.  I wouldn't be happy about the 18M cap number in 22, but I don't know your cap at all, and I suspect it's not a deterrent or you wouldn't have done this.

Rhule emphasizes the teaching aspect. He sees himself and his staff as teachers first. We've all watched tons of video on Darnold - enough to see the rough aspects and the promise. If there is zero improvement, that would be cause for concern about our staff.

I don't think they see Darnold as a franchise guy, necessarily. They may see the potential for that and think they can coach him up enough for him to fulfill that potential. But no, while no improvement would cause me concern, I won't hang my complete evaluation of them on Darnold's progress.
