Opinions..franchise taking Oline in later rounds

I'd be OK with spending some coin on a free agent LT (ie Villanueva ... Or however it's spelled) and let's draft BPA.  We may be able to nicely fill some holes at other need positions with BPA (ie. IOL, S, WR).  Our guard play last year was terrible.  There are NFL starters available in rds 2 & 3 at these positions.

Rounds 1,2,3 picks each year for 20 years.

That is 60 picks.  There are 22 starters between offense and defense.

We have taken 11 offensive linemen.  That is 18.33 percent of the time.

Eight of them, Gross, Wharton, Mathis, Kalil, Otah, Silatolu, Turner and Moton we average to elite starters.  Granted one can argue Silatolu and Mathis ended up being a late bloomer with the Eagles.

Nelson, Butler, Little were busts.  Little could still turn into something but I doubt it.

That is a pretty good draft record and proof that we have not really neglected the position.

Throw in luck of the draft, average playing career, and needing 22 starters we've done far better than average.

We havent drafted a left tackle in the first round in over a decade.  This includes when we had an all world franchise qb.  A generational talent.  There are less than 10% of tackles drafted outside of the first that make All Pro as a first round pick.   So in closing its laughable to even suggest we have a good draft record in drafting offensive line help.  Its insanity that we havent even tried given its the one constant on every good playoff team.

You don't need an All-Pro OT to have a good Oline.

So your whole argument lately is you cannot get All Pro talent for the LT position outside the 1st. We can't draft a LT if he isn't graded out to be an All Pro?

Why do we need All Pros? Is not solid consistent play good enough? There is still a chance we can address the LT position tonight.

We havent even had solid consistent play.  Dont kid yourself.  Pointing out the correlation between All pro and first round is just to show that you have to draft high to get a talented LT.  Something we havent done.

You say "Something we haven't done" like this FO team has been here for years. This is Rhules' 2nd draft, and his 1st with Fritts. Way to early in their tenure to see trends.

You are harping on past deficiencies that really have nothing to do with the present regime

I don't really disagree but you can't go chasing a franchise LT in the first round of every draft.  That's the definition of reaching.  If Sewell had fallen one more spot we'd have taken him.  And having Cam allowed them a luxury, right or wrong, to look at other positions.

Would it have been reaching last year to get Beckton or Wirfs?

Umm, you realize they just passed up the second best LT prospect in the draft right?

Um...you do realise that there are still LTs on the board. Right?

Slater had questions, and many have him penciled in as a G.

Ah screw it. Flame away. Maybe someday we will get that All Pro LT you so covet.

Maybe someday, but its not going to happen throwing darts in the 2nd and 3rd round.  Oh and San Diego isnt moving Slater to guard they immediately announced he was their starting LT.  Imagine that, having a franchise qb and immediately drafting a LT to protect him.  Damn that must be nice.

So tell me again, what are Slaters questions?

    • With the contract money an OT first rounder makes you can ALWAYS get a new girlfriend.  And probably an upgrade at that.  You only got 2 parents.
    • Brother. You are wholly confusing comparing situations and applying actual standards like most other franchises do like simply getting into a playoff series and winning at least 1 or 2 series games with praising. Nobody is praising the Hawks. Nobody is praising the Magic. Nobody here likes those teams. But reality is reality. The Hawks like other franchises have traded players fired coaches etc but they can still win a couple playoff games. How is that not the bare floor for you or anyone else? What are we doing here if it isn't? We've seen eye to eye on many things over the years. But you are in the camp on the Hornets where you are emotionally attached to LaMelo where you feel the need to carry his water like he's got that juice. That's cool that you feel that way. It's your prerogative. But I differ from that viewpoint entirely. If he had that juice we would not have gotten wiped off the court in 2 play in games with 2 different coaching staffs and rosters. if people don't like hearing that well I'm sorry but how the hell is this team ever going to get better and ultimately go anywhere in the postseason if we just blindly pat them on the back for getting their asses whooped before they actually even get into the real playoffs? There seem to be some Bryce Young level standards being applied here. That's wild to me. But to each his own.
    • Proctor/Freeling were always the belles of the ball where we were picking. What those two *could* become at OT was far greater than what others could be at their respective positions and I’m glad our FO could see that.
