Safety Ha Ha Clinton-Dix to participate in Panthers minicamp on a tryout basis

Putting a position on Chinn will end up making your head hurt. The Panthers are looking for linebackers/safeties who can play multiple spots so they can confuse tf out of the opposing offenses.

I agree that the team will disguise Chinn, but it has been said many time now that Chinn will be playing back to front in more of a secondary role.  Will he take snaps at LB?  Sure, but that is not going to be his 'home' this season.

His “home” is going to be very matchup dependent. At different times this season he’ll play slot corner, cover tight ends, deep safety, qb spy, blitzer, box safety, etc.

Saying Clinton-Dix isn’t going to be looked at as a FS because Chinn is a FS is essentially pigeon-holing Chinn into one slot.

If we sign Ha-Ha, it would be purely for safety depth.  Jeremy is going to primary reside in the secondary and yes, once the season starts Chinn will have a S next to his name on the roster/depth chart.

Where do you see Chinn being moved to FS? I thought it was SS. HaHa is still pretty young

Here you go, straight from Phil Snow himself:

Excerpt on Chinn switching his role to focus more on the back end this year.

"Chinn's the obvious part of that, as he's taking most of his work with the safeties this spring after playing linebacker last year. Snow said they were still going to move him around and use him multiple ways, but adding players such as Reddick and Denzel Perryman at linebacker (and both Snow and head coach Matt Rhule have mentioned Frankie Luvu lately as another versatile piece) gives them the flexibility to let Chinn play a deeper role.

"Last year, we used him from the front back, and this year I think he's going to be more from the back up," Snow said of Chinn. "But a lot of the same things he can do, based on what we're calling."

Yep- When Chinn move up to nickel or LB Dix could be in those packages as a FS

That’s narrow minded. Panthers are in the business of acquiring talent.

It would not be shocking at all if the idea of bringing in Clinton-Dix, is that in obvious passing situations (Two-minute and teams playing catch-up) they’ll put Chinn at LB and bring in Clinton-Dix to play FS. That seems slightly more important than depth. We’re not in the building, we don’t have that kind of insight.

I don't see Free Safety in this excerpt, none the less the safety that has a ''box'' support sole is generally the SS. It would likely be better to list him as that as between the 2 safety positions, the Strong is the one you see lining up in the deep middle, in the box, and at times over the slot as the ''Big Nickel''.

Burris and last year's 5th rounder Robinson are the current FS depth, brining in HaHa to compete makes some sense, and Burris was a corner transition to S earlier in his career, & Robinson came from the XFL. At the least HaHa would bring true center-field experience to the back end / depth.

Lol, you need some coffee this morning if a player's position, now apparently reps, gets you this upset.  If a DE drops into coverage, does that make him a corner?  If a LB mugs up to the line in a 9-tech, does that a DE?  If a LB drops into zone in a Tampa-2, does that make him a safety?

Someone needs a hug.

Our safeties are interchangeable, so sure, call it safety.  Agreed, Ha-Ha would be purely a depth signing unless he can beat out Burris.  However, since he got cut so early into the Cowboys camp last year, it seems his better days (at least as a realistic starting option) are over.

That doesn't say anything about FS. There is a difference between the two. FS is more coverage oriented and drops back more. SS stays closer to the front 7 and usually on clean up duty and covers TEs. LB/S hybrids are usually SS.

Saftey Ha Ha Clinton - Dix has never been amongst the best at his position, outside of his 2016 season. He has, however, been a consistently good player, just not out of this world. That's why he has had at least 78 tackles in every season. That's also why he has at least one interception in every season he played.

Dallas Cowboys release Ha Ha Clinton-Dix after just 5 months

It would be great if a "consistently good player" means being better in coverage than what we already have.

I've already addressed this.  Our safeties are interchangeable and yes, I know the difference. If it makes the squad here feel cozy, just call Chinn a safety, that will be used in multiple ways. *will take some snaps at LB.
