Looking at Who Could Emerge as WR3 for Carolina

The #3 WR spot is Marshall's to lose this year. IMO, the long-term plan is for Marshall to take over as the #2 WR after we let Robby walk in FA and for Shi Smith to be the long-term answer in the slot. We'll see how it all plays out, but that looks good to me on paper.

I pretty much agree with this.

My theory---

We want more :"Go" routes and QBs throw more than they did 15 years ago.  I wonder how many WRs lose a step or two in the fourth quarter?  we rotate DTs, and they don't run much.  We rotate DEs--keeping them fresh.

Why is there not more of a rotation for WRs?  You keep them fresh and give the DBs a different look.  I know there are some WR rotations, but normally, when we go to 4 WR sets.  What if, for example, Marshall rotated with Anderson and Moore.  The other Moore and Shi worked the slot.  I mean, why would this be bad?  Is it timing?  Chemistry?  If so, is that more important that fresh legs?

Maybe I am wrong because they don't do this as much as one might think. But in a game, the WR might run the equivalent of 20-40 yard dashes in full gear, fighting DBs, etc. Is that 20th route as crisp as the first?   Maybe that is because it is tough to keep more than 3 quality WRs on the roster---I dunno.

Last season we had Moore, Anderson, Samuel and nothing else.

My prediction is that the load will be shared more than last season and that all three mentioned will get plenty of opportunities. Shi Smith should get less than the other two.

Looking at stats, hopefully Marshall end up as WR3 so he can emerge and be WR1/2 next year. David Moore should have a big advantage over Shi Smith for snaps in the slot, because he is proven in the league. So that will amount a fair share of yards and TD for him.

I am not sure about Shi Smith playing on the outside so his opportunities will depend on how well the others do on the outside and how much rotation there will be for him to add up some yardage and TD.

Worth mentioning. Shi Smith and David Moore could end up taking snaps on the special team and maybe do a few returns along with RB2/3.

The WR group looks super interesting. Cant wait for TC to start and we hear news about the progress.

Do we keep 6 WR and who will it be?
I am still hoping on Omar Bayless but...  we will see.

Agree 100%.

Think it is a question about talent and lack of talent.

If this new WR group ends up being better than last years, there should be more 4 WR sets. Only way I see DJ Moore and Anderson having less snaps (%), is if Marshall and the unknown sixth WR ends up as alternatives on the outside.

Not sure if David Moore is an option on the outside.

The one thing on this is that I am assuming they are confident in Erving and Elflein and that opened them up to taking the risk on Marshall. That along will thinking Christensen would be available in the 3rd.

I said this during the draft as well and I think we were thinking the same thing. We knew Marshall wouldn’t be there at Christensen’s pick so we decided to risk Christensen being available and he was. I know there was some rumor that we got tipped but anyone would have known. I thought that and I didn’t get tipped because another WR next to Thomas is a huge need for NO. It also seemed like they reached on that LB a bit almost as if they assumed we wouldn’t take Marshall.

Even if Marshall works out, it will be a tough look if none of Erving, Elflein or Christensen can be above average NFL starters. That was our biggest non-QB need this offseason and so those were very, very important decisions.

I like Marshall a lot but I did feel like that was a little bit of a luxury pick. Ultimately, I really like our WR corps but it's hard for them to be effective when the QB is mostly horizontal.

I really, really wanted to go OL in the 2nd and 3rd.

If Marshall had a long prolific career nobody will care about whT he did as a rookie.

I agree about Marshall--I am fairly sure we were going OT and this guy with a late first round grade is sitting there.  BPA.  It seems there is some reason (every year) we just do not prioritize the OT position.

That is not to say picking Marshall was the wrong thing to do-

Maybe Darnold will be faster at reading the defense and getting rid of the ball.

About OT--Daley was not bad when he played.  I know, injury history, but sometimes, it is just bad luck.  I think he will win the LT job, but we have 3 who could reach the average level (Daley, Scott, Erving).  I am not giving up on Christensen either, but I found Rhule's comments about him at RT to be disturbing.  Was that for Moton negotiations or was he a depth pick?  At 25, he needs to start now-can he beat out what we have at G now?  Not seeing the spot for him at this time.

I don’t disagree at all. I wanted to go super OL heavy. I was happy to get Moore as an UDFA and while I’m not enamored with Brown at all, in the 6th is worth the chance he gets in shape.

If none of those 3 work out and Moton remains unsigned, we will be in the race for having the worst OL in NFL history in 2022.

Brown is not a great fit here.  We shall see, but his brand of RG is starting to become a bit obsolete, with the zone blocking schemes. Maybe a goalline and special teams G, but I am not seeing the fit in the offense.  Of course, I hope that I am wrong.

It reminds me of the Duke Robinson pick, and that is not fair to Brown.

I am not talking about his performance, I am talking about addressing our second biggest roster weakness. One that has been there for a long time. So, even if he is a stud, if our OL is mediocre to bad again, it's going to matter in the long term. Now, if we eventually fix that, sure....no harm to foul. But that has to get fixed eventually and this was supposedly a great OL draft class.

OT or IOL either. It's mind boggling. We are two owners, two GM's and two HC's into just not really making it a priority. For all his faults, at least Gettleman tried(with moderate success).

Most people undervalued the significance of having Jordan Gross and Ryan Kalil at the two most important OL positions.

    • Just going off the draft sims and he's always sitting around 20 lol. First year in a while where we haven't been thinking about the draft already in late October so haven't really looked into the top 15-20 picks yet. Also the qb class is super weak so he probably will sneak up into 10-15
    • I fully expect them to pick up his 5th year , and they're waiting for him to put a full excellent consistent season of QB play in year 4 or 5. If that don't happen,  they'll eventually cut ties.  Here's to hoping he just goes on a team in 2026. The worst thing he could do is continue to see-saw us to around .500 records because it might be impossible to replace him at that point unless youre willing to do the veteran qb carousel poo we did from 2019 to 2023.
    • What do you think of Bryce Youngs career thus far? Are you excited about his progress or is it not enough for you? I included a poll of ranking his performance through 3 years thus far.  I personally think he's made some decent progress. Has had some high moments (last half of 2024, Rams game, ATL game in 2025)  but in my mind, those are still outweighed by the many more lowlights thus far (ex turnovers, missed throws, poor decisions)  It's a very mixed bag for me. He's done enough to get a 5th year option but by no means should we lock him in with a 50+ mil a year multi year deal. I want to see him play consistently well for a full year before that happens (yes, I'm still saying that going into year 4. That might be telling).  Just sucks when you see CJ Stroud, Jayden Daniel's, Caleb Williams almost immediately lighting poo up with their arm talent. Maybe Bryce is just an ultra slow burn. I don't know what to think anymore. Guess we're gonna be stuck with him for a whilr unless we end up being bad enough to earn a high pick next year. I doubted it lol. Overall Stats for his career:       ● 14 W - 30L (regular season)       ● 0-1 playoffs record        ● 61.4% completion, 8291 passing yards, 49 TDs, 30 INTs  Year 1:       ● 2 wins, 14 losses      ● 60% completion rate, 2877 passing yards, 11 TD to 10 INTs, 5.5 yards per attempted pass Year 2:        ● 4 wins , 8 losses        ● 60.9% completion rate,  2403 passing yards, 15 TD, 9 INTs,  6.3 yards per attempted pass  Year 3:        ● 8 Wins, 8 Losses         ● 63.6% competition rate, 3011 passing yards, 23 TDs to 11 INTs  Playoffs         ● 1 game in year 3 ( 0 - 1 in playoffs)         ● 21/40 (52.5% completion rate), 264 passing yards, 1 TD, 1 INT.
