DVOA 2020 vs. 2021 Offense/Defense/Special Teams

Offense

DVOA 2020: -0.2% (17th in the NFL)

DVOA 2021: -15.9% (25th in the NFL)

Passing DVOA 2020: 12.3% (20th in the NFL)

Passing DVOA 2021: -11.6 (29th in the NFL)

Rushing DVOA 2020: -8.8% (16th in the NFL)

Rushing DVOA 2021: -9.0% (16th in the NFL)

 

Defense

DVOA 2020: 7.3% (24th in the NFL)

DVOA 2021: -6.4% (8th in the NFL)

Passing DVOA 2020: 15.5% (23rd in the NFL)

Passing DVOA 2021: -3.0% (7th in the NFL)

Rushing DVOA 2020: -4.5% (20th in the NFL)

Rushing DVOA 2021: -11.1% (18th in the NFL)

 

Special Teams

DVOA 2020: 0.8 (16th in the NFL)

DVOA 2021: -3.1% (26th in the NFL)

 

Interesting to see that our offense and special teams have gotten so much worse in 2021, especially the passing offense. Conversely, the pass defense improvement has been remarkable. We do still struggle defending the run, however. Modest improvements so far in that area.

Given the fact that our rushing offense is basically the same as last year(middle of the league), I definitely see why they want to put emphasis on that moving forward. If you look at the 2020 vs. 2021 OL stats on FO, the drop off is pretty bad across the board. 

The passing offense though......woof.

In defense of our rushing defense, 42% of our total rushing yardage allowed has been to Elliott and Cook. Those are two of the top 5 rushers(in yds/GM) in the NFL currently.

Taking a closer look at the rush defense specifically:

Game 1(NY Jets)

Jets OL(26th rated DVOA), Rushing Offense(31st in the NFL, 74.0 yds/GM)

Allowed: 45 rushing yards(29 yards under avg)

Game 2(New Orleans)

Saints OL(5th rated DVOA), Rushing Offense(9th in the NFL, 125.8 yds/GM)

Allowed: 48 rushing yards(77.8 yards under avg)

Game 3(Houston Texans)

Texans OL(32nd rated DVOA), Rushing Offense(26th in the NFL, 89.8 yds/GM)

Allowed: 42 rushing yards(47.8 yards under avg)

Game 4(Dallas Cowboys)

Cowboys OL(1st rated DVOA), Rushing Offense(2nd in the NFL, 164.3 yds/GM)

Allowed: 245 rushing yards(80.7 yds OVER avg)

Game 5(Philadelphia Eagles)

Eagles OL(21st rated DVOA), Rushing Offense(15th in the NFL, 113.7 yds/GM)

Allowed: 91 rushing yards(22.7 under avg)

Game 6(Minnesota Vikings)

Vikings OL(25th rated DVOA), Rushing Offense(8th in the NFL, 127.8 yds/GM)

Allowed: 198 rushing yards(70.2 yds OVER avg)

 

So we have pretty much won 4 out of 6 matchups on the DL. It's just the shelling we have taken in those two big losses skewed our stats quite a bit.

Actually, if you look at OL DVOA and Adjusted Sack Rate, there have been 3-4 years since 2010 that have been worse than this year.

That's actually the most upsetting part. Poor OL play isn't rare in Carolina

I think it is a systemic problem and probably starts in our scouting/evaluation department. Wonder how much turnover we've had there or if it has remained stagnant for the last decade. We do seem to make the same O-line mistakes again and again.

Actually, I think it really begins and ends in our front office. We don't really spend significant draft capital trying to build there historically. There is only so much dumpster diving you can do and be successful.

And I think the new boss there may be the same as the old boss there. I've said it before, Fitterer looks busy but his hit rate is pretty low at this point and really bad when it comes to offensive linemen.

      Like many of the old heads, I’ve been here for a long time.  I got a lot of respect for everyone on this board for your dedication to this team.  We’ve all been through it during the tougher years. At this point in life, I’m not one to judge anyone’s level of dedication, or their reasons why anymore.  Time, and a lot of bad football, will do that.  For me, it’s simple.  We share a common bond.  For that, I love and appreciate all of you crazy SOB’s. For me, last season was at a minimum, entertaining.  BY lead a young team to multiple come from behind 4th qtr wins.  That showed me heart, and that he has the clutch gene.  That’s the wildcard intangible.  For me, that was fun to watch even  if it was mindbogglingly frustrating at times.  Over the past two seasons, we have progressively built a better team around him.  On paper, the defense should be better this season.  That’ll help.  Let’s see what he can do as the other guys continue to develop too.  Besides, his contract is cheap for a few more years, and we just made some smart cap decisions during the draft. Let’s see how it shakes out.

      I would very much liked to have seen Jake Delhomme's career if Tommy Jone no hurt Jake.  I just know that roster and the leadership were destined to hit paydirt but Jake was never the same after the elbow injury, and unfortunately he was the sole reason they didn't make it back to the big one.  I think that 08 team was the best in the league, and Jake masked his inability well all season til the Arizona game put it all on display.  I'll go back to the season prior even and say the 07 team was primed to be a competitor.  Jake was off to a fantastic start that year (for a Panthers QB).  They may have been a championship caliber club for a few seasons after 08 too.
